ARCHERY

rchery is the art, practice, or skill of propelling arrows with the use of a bow, from "arcus" (Latin). Archery has historically been used for hunting and combat; in modern times, however, its main use is that of a recreational activity. One who practice archery is typically known as an "archer" or "bowman", and one who is fond of or an

expert at archery can be referred to as a "toxophilite"

he bow seems to have been invented in the late Paleolithic or early Mesolithic periods. The oldest indication for its use in Europe comes from the Stellmoor in the Ahrensburg valley north of Hamburg, Germany and date from the late Paleolithic, about 10,000

9000 BC. The arrows were made of pine and consisted of a mainshaft and a 1520 centimetre (68 inches) long fore shaft with a flint point. There are no definite earlier bows; previous pointed shafts are known, but may have been launched by atlatls rather than bows. The oldest bows known so far come from the Holmegrd swamp in Denmark. Bows eventually replaced the

atlatl as the predominant means for launching shafted projectiles, on every continent except Australia (woomera used), though the atlatl persisted alongside the bow in parts of the Americas, notably Mexico (from which its Nahuatl name comes) and amongst the Inuit.

rchery was highly developed in Asia and in the Islamic world. In East Asia, ancient Korean civilizations, such as the Silla, Baekje, and Goguryeo were well known for their regiments of exceptionally skilled archers. Central Asian tribesmen (after the

domestication of the horse) and American Plains Indians (after gaining access to horses) were extremely adept at archery on horseback. At Crecy, France, in the year 1346, the English longbow proved its worth for the first time in Continental warfare.

TYPE OF BOWS
Recurve bow= Often made of more than one material, either laminated carbon or fiberglass, with the tips curving away from the archer -- a very good bow for beginners, it is also the exclusive bow of the Olympics Reflex bow = Sometimes confused with the recurve, the reflex bow curves completely away from the archer when unstrung Self bow= Made from one material, usually wood, fairly straight Straight bow= Nearly completely straight, made of laminated fiberglass or carbon Longbow = Very similar to its medieval ancestors, made only of wood with of course a hand grip and/or sight, not considered used by many serious archers Composite bow = Bow made of more than one material; usually a wooden core, molded fiberglass or carbon, then laminated

Compound = Not unlike the recurve, except for pulleys that aid in efficiency and

adjustable limbs

BADMINTON

atuk Lee Chong Wei (born October 21, 1982 in Georgetown, Penang) is a professional badmintonplayer from Malaysia who resides in Bukit Mertajam. Lee won the silver medal in the 2008 Olympic Games, thus becoming the first

Malaysian to reach the final of the men's singles event and ending Malaysia's Olympic medal drought since the 1996 Games. This achievement also earned him the title Datuk, and a description by Malaysian Prime Minister NajibTunRazak as a national hero. As a singles player, Lee was ranked first worldwide on August 21, 2008. He is the third Malaysian men's singles shuttler after Rashid Sidek and RoslinHashim to achieve such a ranking (since official rankings were first kept in the 1980s), and is the only Malaysian shuttler to hold the ranking for more than two weeks. Despite his number 1 status since 2008, Lee is still searching for his

first Olympic Games, World Championship and Asian Games titles. Lee picked up only one title in 2002 and 2003, the major achievement being, reaching the final of the 2003 Malaysia Open, his first final of a major tournament, where was defeated by Chen Hong of China. Lee then secured two titles in 2004, the Malaysia Open and Chinese Taipei Open. Lee gained a spot for 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. In his first Olympics appearance, Lee defeated Ng Wei of Hong Kong in the first round. His journey ended in the second round when he was beaten by Chen Hong. Lee then bagged another two titles in 2005, his second Malaysia Open title and Denmark Open. Lee bagged bronze in his first appearance in the world meet, the 2005 World Championships after losing to eventual winner TaufikHidayat in the semifinal.

ee started the year with the title in all events he took part, his first treble in the Super Series titles. His first ever Korea Open crown, sixth Malaysia

Open, and defeated Kenichi Tago to win the oldest and prestigious badminton championship in the world, the All England Open, his first one since he took part in 2004. Lee participated in the Thomas Cup in his home ground. He managed to defeat Kenichi Tago and take the first point, despite Malaysia's eventual loss (23) to Japan. In the quarter finals, he beat Peter Gade, thus helping to secure Malaysia's place in the semi-finals. In the semi finals against China, Lee was defeated by Lin Dan, which ended his 18-match unbeaten record since the start of the year. In January, Lee won his seventh Malaysia Open title by defeating TaufikHidayat from Indonesia in the final However, he failed to defend the Korea Open title, the world's first ever million-dollar badminton tournament, after being beaten by Lin Dan from China in three games. In March, Lee cruised into the final of the All England Open for the third consecutive time and retained his title successfully with a convincing straight games victory over Lin Dan, and was praised by prime minister NajibTunRazak. On Labour Day, he won his first ever India Open, and also his third consecutive Malaysia Open Grand Prix Gold title a week later. Despite the fact that Lee won all his matches he played during the Sudirman Cup, Malaysia's journey ended in quarterfinals, after being beaten by South Korea 23.

GOOD LUCK IN YOUR FUTURE SHALIN ZULKIFLI

GOLF
TIGER NOT BIGGER THAN THE GAME ANYMORE

Even after everything that has happened the past couple of years Tiger Woods remains the world's most recognizable athlete.

on and off the golf course

He still brings in huge TV ratings, which bring in sponsors, who bring in the piles of cash that have made the PGA Tour a millionaires' club. When he's on the leaderboard, especially at major championships, he still brings in the casual fan who otherwise has little interest in the sport. He's still good for golf, even when, because of injury or infidelity, his golf hasn't been good. But is Woods bigger than the game?

19

Until the past couple of years, such an argument could be made. He was the best golfer and highest-paid athlete on the planet. His presence was so compelling that Tiger-less tournaments sometimes struggled and at least one, The International, folded. He was THAT BIG. But now? Dealing with a self-inflicted, scandal-driven divorce? Adjusting to life as a single dad? Battling a troublesome left knee and nagging Achilles tendon? Now, he's not. He's not the same golfer, same guy, same omnipotent force that he was throughout the first 14 years of his historic career. He's 35 and hasn't won a major since the 2008 U.S. Open. He hasn't won anywhere since the 2009 Australian Masters. And, still recovering from those leg injuries, he won't win this week's British Open, which will tee off without him Thursday at Royal St. George's. Yet the game goes on. The Masters was still The Masters, even though Woods needed a 67 on Sunday to finish fourth, four strokes behind winner CharlSchwartzel. The U.S. Open was still the U.S. Open, even though Woods didn't play, as 21-year-old Rory McIlroy, after final-round collapses at St. Andrews and Augusta National, treated us to a wonderful story of redemption by dominating the field at Congressional. So there's no good reason to believe this British Open, with McIlroy heading a new generation of gifted golfers, won't produce another memorable championship especially since the past

11 majors were won by 11 different men, the last five of which had an average age of 27. Pay no attention to the know-nothings who blather on about Woods' absence being the most newsworthy aspect of the tournament. The fact that Woods didn't play in last month's U.S. Open was quickly forgotten, swept away by McIlroy's spectacular performance.
20

Fact is, there are too many other terrific golfers, including young Americans like Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler, to say Tiger-less golf isn't compelling, can't sell, doesn't matter. These guys really are good. And the game is too good. Sure, Woods is missed. He's still the biggest name in golf. But he's not bigger than the game. Not anymore.
