ChemLab Test2020!04!15v1Ans

This document contains a student's test paper for course STGC1001. The test has two parts: Part A contains 7 multiple choice questions about laboratory techniques like filtration, distillation, and extraction. Part B contains 3 short answer questions - drawing and labeling a vacuum filtration apparatus, balancing two redox reactions, and explaining why experiments use excess reactants. The student is asked to answer in pen on the test paper and submit a scan or photo through the learning management system.

Student name: _STGC____________ Student ID: _1001_____________ Date: _2020-04-15___________

Course code: S T G C 1 0 0 1
Instructions: Answer the questions with a ball-pen on this test paper. Scan/photo the answered paper
and submit by UMmoodle.

Part A) Multiple choice – circle your answers. [70%]

1) How many protrusion (pointed angles) are resulted in the properly folded-fluted filter paper?
A) 4
B) 6
C) 8
D) 12
E) 16

2) How many piece(s) of filter paper should be used to ensure the vacuum-filtration to occur
properly?
A) 1
B) 2
C) Depends on the experiment.
D) It should half a piece to save resource.

3) In the simple filtration procedure, what is the level it is usually fine to fill up the funnel with the
supernatant liquid?
A) ¼ (a quarter)
B) 1/3 (a third)
C) ½ (a half)
D) ¾ (three quarter)
E) 1 (completely filled up the funnel)

4) When is an appropriate time to turn off the vacuum suction?

A) Immediately after the liquid is drained from the Buchner funnel.
B) After the crystals are completely dry.
C) After disconnecting the vacuum suction tubing from the conical flask.
D) Any time is fine to turn off the vacuum suction.

5) What are substances normally added to the Erlenmeyer flask which is heated up later during
recrystallization process?
A) Anti-bumping granules
B) Solvent
C) Charcoal
D) Magnetic stirrer bar
E) Nothing should be added.
6) In the distillation process, where is the properly adjusted position of the bulb of thermometer?
A) Below the liquid surface.
B) Just above the liquid surface.
C) Near the location of the connecting side glass tube.
D) Near the top of the glass apparatus above the round-bottom-flask.

7) In extraction process (in the demonstration), where does the substance extracted into?
A) Water
B) Organic solution
C) Solvent
D) All of the above

Part B) Short questions – write your answers in the provided space. [30%]

8) Please draw and legend the apparatus set up of the vacuum filtration in the space below.

9) Balance the following redox reactions by half equation method.

i) Bi(OH)3 + SnO22-  SnO32- + Bi (in basic solution)
Reduction: Bi3+ + 3e  Bi
Oxidation: SnO22- + 2OH-  SnO 32   H2O + 2e
Reduction  2 + oxidation  3  Overall: 2Bi(OH)3  3SnO 22  
 2Bi  3SnO 32   3H2O
ii) ClO3- + Cl-  Cl2 + ClO2 (in acidic solution)
-
Reduction: ClO3 + 2H + e  ClO2 + H2O
+

Oxidation: 2Cl-  Cl2 + 2e

Reduction  2 + oxidation  1  Overall: 4H  2Cl  2ClO 3  Cl2  2ClO2  2H2O
10) Under normal experimental conditions, one of the reactants will be used in excessive quantity,
instead of the stoichiometric amount. Please explain the reasons.
Ans: the use of excess amount in one of the reactants is to ensure that the chemical reaction
shifts to more to the direction of forward side, according to Le Chatelier’s principle, so that more
products are formed. This is particularly important in those chemical reactions that has a low
equilibrium constant value at the reaction conditions.
