We have been exploring the third party SIP endpoint registration in CUCM, so far we have seen 3CX and X Lite SIP Phone registration in
CUCM. There is one more popular SIP Soft phone known as Ekiga.
Ekiga (earlier identified as GnomeMeeting) is one of the best open source VoIP SoftPhone, Video Conferencing and Instant Messaging
software over the Internet. It is compatible with almost SIP phone service providers in the market.
It holds HD sound excellence and video up to DVD size and superiority. It is interoperable with many VoIP software open source since it
uses both the telephony standards SIP and H.323. It also offers Linux softphone client.
Tools Required
1. Ekiga Softphone: I have user Ekiga Softphone 4.0.2 version for this article which available to download form the following link.
2. Cisco Unified Communications Manager: I have tried and registered Ekiga Softphone successfully in all 7+ version of Call Manager. The
installation and basic configuration of Cisco Call manager will be covered soon.
Well, let’s get started with registration of Ekiga in Cisco Unified Communications Manager.
Go to User Management >> End User and set up the user for Softphone (you can use LDAP user or local user). In this example I have used
‘Earline.Hanson’ local user for the registration.
[Note: Owner and Owner User ID is not necessary to get register, but it is recommended to select the specific user for the phone]
Device Security Pro䕃le: Third-part SIP Device Basic – Standard SIP Non-Secure Pro䐹le
SIP Pro䕃le: Standard SIP Pro䐹le
Digest User: Earline.Hanson (End user created at Step 1)
[Note: Auto network detection might cause loops issue where Call Manager refuses the REGISTER message. Ekiga detects 2 NICs, and
sources REGISTER messages with each IP configured. CM detects them duplicate and rejects registration]
Now let’s go ahead and add SIP account in Ekiga Softphone. Move over to Edit >> Accounts
Accounts >> Add a SIP Account
>> Click OK
If everything is good, you can see Registered Status in the status bar of the Ekiga phone.
Ekiga Softphone receiving an incoming call.
It looks little odd while you make an outbound call, Ekiga supports only SIP URI dialing. That means if you want to call an extension 1001,
you may have to dial 1001@<IP/HOSTNAME_OF_SIP_REGISTRAR_SERVER>.
Hope this helps to you to register Ekiga Softphone with CUCM, please like our facebook page to get latest updates.
