This paper consists of six questions

Question one :

In garment making, a fashion designer cannot perform his /her sewing without the necessary tools
and equipments in the work shop.

a) Differentiate between tools and equipment in regard to fashion and design work. (04
marks)
b) With relevant examples explain four categories of tools and equipment commonly used in
garment making. (08
marks)
c) With aid of a neat sketch, draw the head of sewing machine and label eight parts.

Question two:

Safety precautions in a fashion designer’s workshop are guidelines put in place or pinned in order
to ensure secure or safe, not dangerous or harmful to the workshop or workplace users. These
guidelines prevent or remind anyone.

a) Explain five safety precautions that can be put in place to ensure safe working environment
in a fashion designer’s workshop. (10 marks)

b) Identify five qualities of a good fashion designer. (10 marks)


Question three.

Art and design elements are defined as the guidelines followed during the construction or
formulation of any garment process.

(a) Differentiate between garment making and fashion?

(b) Identify three importance of elements to a fashion designer.

(c) Explain five elements of design in relation to fashion.

In fashion and design, there are several trade terms that are easily understood and used by
most of fashion designers practitioners.

Explain the following terms in relation to fashion and garment design

iii. Slit (2marks)
iv. Vent (2marks)
v. Gloss (2marks)
vi. Gross (2marks)
vii. Pile (2marks)
viii. Purl (2marks)

There is no proper garment constructed without any type of stitches or different types of stitches
depending on the fashion or desires of the wearer.

a) Define the term stitch? (01 mark)


b) Mention four general rules for working out stitches. (04 marks)
c) Outline three factors to be considered when choosing the specific type of stitch for the work
to be carried out . (03 marks)
d) Give and explain two types of stitches belonging to each classification below;
i. Temporal stitches. (4 marks)
ii. Permanent stitches (4 marks)
iii. Decorative stitches (4 marks)

Question six

In fashion and design , from ancient days todate, openings contribute and play a great role to
the garment and wearer .

a) Differentiate between an opening and a binding in relation to garment making.(4marks)


b) Give for qualities of good opening . (04 marks)
c) Mention four factors to be considered when choosing an opening used for the garment.
(04 marks)
d) Explain four types of useful openings found on the garment. (08 marks)
