Absence and Class Participation Policy

UP Cebu’s policy concerning Class Attendance and Leave of Absence can be found on Section
XII, page 8 and Section XIII, page 8, respectively, of the UP Cebu Student Manual.
Participating in the course and attending lectures and submission of course requirements are
vital to the learning process. As such, attendance is required at all lectures and all classroom
activities. Students who miss class due to illness or emergency are required to bring a
medical certificate from their health-care provider, certified by the UP Cebu physician. Failure
to submit said medical certificate will result in unexcused absences.

Assignments and Examinations

Deadline for submission of problem sets and other assignments shall be the meeting
immediately after the problem set/assignment is given. Late submissions will not be
accepted.

There will be five (5) long exams and one (1) final exam.
Long Exams: Since some students would require more time to answer these exams than the
usual time allotment of 1.5 hours, these may be scheduled outside of the class
period. Arrangements shall be made to make sure that everybody is available
during the said examination period.
Final Exam: The class shall follow the final examination schedule prepared by the Office of
the College Secretary and Registrar.

Grading Scale and Policies

1. Class Participation (CP):
a. For every day of attendance, the student earns one (1) point.
b. A student is given five (5) points for every star  earned by solving a problem on the
board during class period.
2. Average of the scores for all Problem Sets (PS) shall constitute one long exam.
3. Each exam (long exam and final exam) is worth 100 points.
4. System to be used in computing the final grade is the averaging system.
5. Final Average (FA) is computed as follows:

FA = LE1 + LE2 + LE3 + PS + 0.1* CP + 2*FE

6
and the following distribution is adopted in giving the grade equivalent:

Final Average (FA) Final Grade Quality

[ 93 , 100 ] % 1.0 Excellent
[ 90 , 93 ) % 1.25
[ 87 , 90 ) % 1.50 Very Good
[ 84 , 87 ) % 1.75
[ 80 , 84 ) % 2.0 Good
[ 75 , 80 ) % 2.25
[ 70 , 75 ) % 2.50 Satisfactory
[ 65 , 70 ) % 2.75
[ 60 , 65 ) % 3.0 Passing
[ 55 , 60 ) % 4.0 Conditional
[ 0 , 55 ) % 5.0 Failed
INC Incomplete

6. Policy for removal of grades of INC or 4.0 can be found in Section XV, page 10 of the UP
Cebu Student Manual.

Requests for dropping (DRP) of courses

Requests must be made in accordance with University policies. Please refer to the UP Cebu

Classroom Behavior Policy

For a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where all of us feel comfortable with each
other and where we can foster a positive learning environment, we must focus on the tasks at
hand.
Students are therefore requested to refrain from doing the following during the class period:
1. disruptive conversations with people sitting around them during lecture,
2. extraneous activities such as texting, chatting, reading a newspaper, making phone calls,
doing problems sets for another class, and
3. use of personal electronics such as laptops, iPads, and cellphones during the class period, as
these are distracting to other students and the instructor.

Accessibility and Accommodations

Our goal in this classroom is that learning experiences be as accessible as possible. If you
anticipate or experience physical or academic barriers based on disability, or if you find that
standard classroom seating is not usable, please let me know immediately so that we can discuss
options.

Code of Academic Integrity

Students are encouraged to share intellectual views and discuss freely the principles and
applications of course materials. However, graded work/exercises/problem sets must be the
product of independent effort unless otherwise instructed. Intellectual dishonesty is a serious act
of misconduct. Students are expected to adhere to Article III on Intellectual Dishonesty as
described in the 2012 UP Code of Student Conduct. See
http://www.nip.upd.edu.ph/sites/default/files/2012%20Code%20of%20Student%20Conduct.pdf
and Section XXI of the UP Cebu Student Manual.
The UP Cebu Library has some excellent resources which contain tips for avoiding plagiarism, see
https://upcebulibrary.wordpress.com/ebsco-2/

UP Cebu Nondiscrimination and Anti-harassment Policy

UP Cebu is committed to creating and maintaining an environment free of discrimination. Our
classroom is a place where everyone is encouraged to express well-formed opinions and their
reasons for those opinions. We also want to create a tolerant and open environment where such

opinions can be expressed without resorting to bullying or discrimination of others.

Policy on sexual harassment can be found in Section XXII of the UP Cebu Student Manual.
