Where specimens ae to be stored inthe testing facility for more than 4 hours they shall be protected from moisture loss eg. by covering with wet hessian or impermeable membrane, ‘Wipe all testing machine bearing surfaces clean and remove any loose grit or other extraneous material from the surfaces ofthe specimen that wll be in contact with the platens. Do not use packing, other than ausiliary platens or spacing blocks (see EN 12390-4) between the specimen andthe platens of the testing machine. ‘With tworcoluma testing machines, cubic specimens shouldbe placed with the trowelled surface notin ‘contact with the platens and fcingaeolumn, Wipe the excess moisture from the surface of the specimen before placing inthe testing machine. Position the cube specimens so that the load is applied perpendicularly tothe direction of casting Contre the specimen with respect tothe lower platen to an accuracy of 1% ofthe designated size of cubic, or designated dlameter of cylindrical specimens. ‘auxiliary platens are used, align them with the top and bottom face ofthe specimen. 7.2 Loading Select a constant rate of loading within the range 0.6 *0.2.MPa/s (N/mm?-s). After the application of the initial load, which does not exceed approximately 30% ofthe failure aad, apply the load to the specimen without shock and increase continuously atthe selected constant rate + 10%, until no greater load can be sustained ‘Theil load shouldbe applied as close as possible to the selected rate of loading. ‘When using manually contrlled testing machines, correct any tendency forthe selected rate of loading todecrease, as specimen failure is approached by appropriate adjustment of the controls. During the final stages ofthe test, the load rate can be aflectd by the failure mode of the specimen, [Nevertheless every elort should be made to maintain the selected loading rate as close as possible. Heat the misture tothe temperature recommended by the supplier oF toa temperature where, whilst stirring continuously, the required consistency is reached ‘The mixture is stirred continuously to ensure its homogeneity and to avoid sediment forming atthe bottom of the melting pot If capping operations have to be carried out repeatedly, it is advisable to use two thermostatically ‘controled melting pots, ‘The level ofthe mictue inthe melting pot should never be allowed to fal too low, as there willbe an Increased risk ofthe preduction of sulfur vapour, which could ignite, ‘CAUTION — A fume extraction system should be operating during the whole melting process, to ‘ensure full extraction ofthe sulfur vapour, which has a higher density than air. Care should be ‘taken to ensure thatthe temperature ofthe mixture is maintained within the specified range, to reduce the risk of pollution. Lower one ond ofthe specimen, held vertically, into a pool of molten sulfur mixture on a horizontal Plate/mould.
