At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:

 Illustrate situations that involve direct and inverse variations.


 Translate into variation statement a relationship involving direct and inverse
variation between two quantities given by a table values, a mathematical
equation and a graph.
 Solve problems involving direct and inverse variations.

2. ANALYSIS
 From the previous activity, the students will be asked by
the following questions:
1. How do you define direct and inverse variation?
2. Do you find it hard to solve direct and inverse variation?
3. ABSTRACTION
 Direct variation occurs when a situation produces pairs of numbers in

which the ratio is constant. 𝑦=𝑘𝑥 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑘= Where k is the constant of

variation or constant of proportionality. If an increase in x causes an
increase in y or vice versa we can say:
o “y varies directly as x”
o “y is directly proportional to x” and
o “y is proportional to x”

 Inverse variation occurs when a situation produces pairs of numbers


whose product is constant
If an increase in x causes a decrease in y or vice versa we can say
that:

4. APPLICATION
Solve for the following:

 If x varies directly as y and x=35 when y=7. What is the value of y


when x=25?

 If a varies directly as the square of b, and a=24 when b=6, find a


when b=21.
 The number of house t, required to finish a certain job varies
inversely as the number of persons, N. if 16 persons require 18
hours to finish the job. How long would it take 64 persons to finish
the job?

IV. EVALUATION
Try to solve:
1. If p varies directly as q ,∧ p=18 , whenq=6. Find p when q=14
2. If x varies directly as the square of y ,∧x =24∧ y=32 , find x when y=64

V. ASSIGNMENT
1.The amount of money raised at a school fundraiser is directly
proportional to the number of people who attend. Last year, the amount of
money raised for 100attendees was $2500.  How much money will be
raised if 1000people attend this year?
2. If y varies directly with the square of x, and if y=4 when x=3, what is y
when x=2?
3. he value of y varies inversely (or indirectly) with x, and y=4 when x=3.
Find x when y=6.
