Introduction to Music Theory and Musicianship

HW#3 (due Sept 30)

1) On the score for Sancti Mei by Roland Lassus, write every vertical interval (number and quality) which
occurs in the first 12 bars (as indicated on the score) between the two vocal parts. Write those intervals
on the score between the two voices. Reduce all intervals over an octave to their equivalent smallest
interval. (Ie: write a M9 as a M2, or a P11 as a P4).

Based on these first 12 bars, what sorts of patterns can you see regarding the use of consonance and
dissonance?

2) Listen to the first and last movements of Funf Lieder by Erik Oña. In the first movement, how would you
describe this movement’s relationship with consonance and dissonance? What role do the microtonal
elements play? In the last movement, what is interesting about the intervals that are chosen? What’s
unusual about the penultimate (second to last) bar? From a compositional standpoint, why does it make
sense that there might be something unusual there?

3) Find a melody you really like. Tell me what it is, with an audio link if possible. Write down three
characteristics of that melody that make it distinctive. Then craft your own melodic line based on those
characteristics. It should be at least 8 notes long. Write down what other qualities you think are important
in melody-writing.
