 THE FAMILY AND FAMILY HEALTH

 OBJECTIVES
o Know the concept of family, its functions and structure and the levels of prevention in
the family health
o Review the family health nursing process, the principles, how they are being assessed
 FAMILY
o “Family is a group of two or more person birth, marriage, and residing together in a
house hold" US Bureau of census,1980
 Family is the single most important influence in a child's life. From their first moments of life,
children depends on parents and family to protect them and provide for their needs. Parents
and family from a child's first relationships.
 Family Structure and functions
o Family structures are changing as well with the traditional two-parent biological intact
o family giving way to single-parent families, grandparents raising grandchildren, and
children living with extended family or in foster care situations.
 Types of Family
o Nuclear Family- The nuclear family is the most basic type of family portrayed by media
as a happy family living in total harmony. A nuclear family is seen as an ‘ideal family’
many advertisers use nuclear families to symbolize
o Extended- These may be seen as a contrast to nuclear families and are seen as pretty
basic as well. An extended family is several generations of the same family living in the
same household or in neighbourhood.
o Single-Parent- Single-parent families have the same definition as their name, one parent
living with one or more children
o Reconstituted- A reconstituted family is when two previously married spouses begin a
relationship and get married. However it can be referred to as reconstituted if the
spouses had children in their “previous martial relations”. The spouses’ spouse then
becomes that spouse’s step-children. For example, if Bob married Jane; Jane’s children
would be Bob’s ‘step-children’ and he their ‘step-father
o Childless- family with no child
 Roles and responsibilities of family members
o Parents. it is the primary duty of the parents to work in order to support their basic
needs.
o Father. is the head of the family, he provides for the family.
o Mother. manages the household chores and looks after the welfare of each family
member.
 Gender- Was first use as phrase “the social relation of gender”
o The social relations of gender seek to explain sharing, decision making, division of labor
and return to labor within the household and in society, among others
 Gender Sensitivity
o Means GENDER AWARENESS which is more analytical and critical since it clarifies issues
about gender disparities and gender issues.
o It pertains to one’s effort to show ho gender shapes the role of women and menin
society including their role in development and how it affects relations
o between them
 Universal characteristics of families
o Family is a Universal group. It is found in some form or the other, in all types of societies
whether primitive or modern.
 A family is based on marriage, which results in a mating relationship between
two adults of opposite sex.
 Every family provides an individual with a name, and hence, it is a source of
nomenclature.
 Family is the group through which descent or ancestry can be traced.
 Family is the most important group in any individual’s life.
 Family is the most basic and important group in primary socialization of an
individual
 Characteristics of a healthy family
o Behaviors Indicating a Well Family.
 Able to provide for physical emotional and spiritual needs of family members.
 Able to be sensitive to the needs of the family members.
 Able to communicate thought and feelings effectively
 Able to provide support, security and encouragement.
 Family stages and tasks
o unattached adult,
o newly married adults,
o childbearing adults,
o preschool-age children,
o school-age children,
o teenage years,
o launching center,
o middle-aged adults,
o retired adults
 Levels of prevention in family health
o There are three levels of prevention
o 1) improving the overall health of the population (primary prevention)
o improving (secondary prevention)
o 4) improving treatment and recovery (tertiary prevention).
 The Family Health Nursing Process
o Family Health Nursing Process is a systematic approach to help family to develop and
strengthen its capability to meet its health needs and solve health problem. The main
objective or goals of family health nursing process are health promotion, prevention
from disease and control of health problem.
 Definition of family health nursing & family nursing process
o Family Health Nursing Process is a systematic approach to help family to develop and
strengthen its capability to meet its health needs and solve health problem. The main
objective or goals of family health nursing process are health promotion, prevention
from disease and control of health problem.
 Principles of family nursing process
o PRINCIPLES OF FAMILY HEALTH SERVICES
 Nurse should have friendly relations with every family and should encourage the
families to have good relation with each other and in the community.
 It is essential to have the knowledge of all basic facts about the family e.g., its
size, occupation, customs, rituals, and education standard etc.
 Problems should be identified and assigned the priority level.
 Problems should be discussed with the family. For finding the solution of the
problem, opinion of the family members should be considered and the
information about the available health and development facilities should be
given to them.
 Co-operation of the family members should be obtained to implement the
desired plan of action.
 What is the Nursing Process
o The nursing process is an evidence-based, five-step scientific method used to ensure
that the patient is assessed, diagnosed and receives continuity of care across
appropriate healthcare providers and departments
o Assessment phase- Before a patient can receive any treatment or medications, the
healthcare team needs to know as much as possible about their situation to Enable
them to identify the needs of the patient both immediately and in the future
o Diagnosing phase- involves the nurse using their clinical skills and judgment to make a
diagnosis about a current or potential health condition of an individual, family or
community
o Planning phase- The planning phase may also be known as the outcomes phase and it is
the stage that involves formulating a plan of action. It can only occur once the nurse or
healthcare team and the patient, if practical, agree on a diagnosis
o Implementing phase- During this phase, the nurse implements the nursing care plan of
action as determined in the previous phase. Interventions in this phase will be delegated
to an appropriate member of the healthcare team or may be dependent on the patient
performing them.
o Evaluation phase- The final phase of the nursing process is the evaluation phase. It takes
place following the interventions to see if the goals have been met. The usual method
employed is to complete an evaluation form that the nurse fills in for each intervention
or treatment.
