Lesson Plan for Grade 7

PERFECT TENSES
(Past Perfect)

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
 Define the meaning and the format on how to form the past perfect tenses.
 Use the past tense to express past events with specified
 Match the sentences with the correct past perfect tenses.
 Complete the sentences using the correct past perfect tense.
 Use the past perfect tense to write about happy/unforgettable experiences

B. Recall
 The teacher will recall the past tense, how it is formed and
its example sentences will be given by the students.

C. Lesson Proper
Generalization

The PAST PERFECT TENSE indicates that an action was completed


(finished or "perfected") at some point in the past before something else
happened. This tense is formed with the past tense form of "to have" (HAD)
plus the past participle of the verb
 I had walked two miles by lunchtime.
 I had run three other marathons before entering the
Boston Marathon.
Presentation of the lesson

PAST PERFECT TENSE


. The past perfect tense is used to show that something happened
before another action in the past. It can also be used to show that something
happened before a specific time in the past. To form the past perfect tense you
use the past tense of the verb "to have," which is had, and add it to the past
participle of the main verb. For example: subject + had + past participle =
past perfect tense.

  It doesn't matter if the subject is singular or plural; the formula


doesn't change.

Some examples of the past perfect tense can be seen in the following
sentences:
 She had met him before the party.
 The plane had left by the time I got to the airport.
 I had written the email before he apologized.
 Kate had wanted to see the movie, but she did not have money for the
ticket.

Past Perfect Negative


When creating negative sentences, we use the auxiliary verbs hadn’t
(had not) together with the past participle form of the verb. You can also
create a negative sentence by using the auxiliary verb had with the time
expression never and then the past participle.
Example:

 I had not eaten at that restaurant before today.


 Samantha hadn’t had time to explain her side of the story.
 My friends hadn’t ever gone to France.
 My friends had never gone to the USA either.

Yes/No Question

To create a question that will be answered with a yes or no, start the
question with had (Hadn’t for a negative question) then add a
subject (the person or thing that had done the action) followed by the
Past Participle form of the verb and only then add the rest of the
sentence.

Example:

 Had you cleaned up the mess by the time they came home?


 Had Adam ever spoken to the CEO before he was fired?

Re-statement of generalization
The teacher asks a volunteer to summarize the lesson.

IV. Application
 The teacher will give an activity that is called “Pass the
sentence”.
 The instruction of the game will be then explain by the teacher.

ACTIVITY #2 A. Put in the verbs in brackets into the gaps and form
sentences in Past Perfect. Use contracted forms only when there are
personal pronouns.
