Overview
This section covers the components of the engine management system.

For information on description and operation:

REFER to: Electronic Engine Controls (303-14C, Description and Operation).

Inspection and Verification

1. Verify the customer concern.

2. Visually inspect for obvious mechanical or electrical faults.

Visual inspection
Mechanical Electrical
Engine oil level Fuses
Cooling system coolant level Fuse 1E, engine compartment junction box
Fuel level/contamination Fuse 6E, engine compartment junction box
Fuel leaks Fuse 19E, engine compartment junction box
Fuel pumps Wiring harness
Intake air system Electrical connector(s)
Accessory drive belt Injectors
Sensor fitment/condition Glow plugs
Viscous fan and solenoid 5 volt sensor supply
Sensor(s)
Engine control module (ECM)

3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding
to the next step

4. Use the approved diagnostic system or a scan tool to retrieve any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) before moving
onto the symptom chart or DTC index.
Make sure that all DTCs are cleared following rectification.
