REFLECTION PAPER ON PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION”

Purposive Communication is a technical term that means a communication that is well thought out and
explained very well, not just thrown out there without thinking about how it is received and
understood. Since, communication should happen with lots of thinking, planning what to say is essential,
one of the examples is when a person gives a speech it is considered as a purposive communication, for
the reason that before a person stands in front of his audience the words that he will utter are already
planned. However, purposive communication does not happen anytime. There are instances that
instead of thinking carefully of what to say there are mishaps where in a person get a lot of things that
pop into his head, that is why there are ideas and concepts which guide a person to achieve purposive
communication. First, is Aristotle’s rhetoric that defines communication as something that taught us
that when a person speaks, there are lots of techniques that he can use to create and share messages in
an artful way to persuade his listeners and in different situation a person chooses small choices that will
make him less persuasive. Its essence to purposive communication is that it enables a person to use
techniques that will make him more comfortable in communicating with other people, these
techniques also help a person assess what to say to share ideas, to instruct, or in addressing something.
As for myself, in class we focus on many skills. One skill which was a struggle for myself is oral
communication, that is why it is important for me to organized my ideas before sharing them to other
people because I do not have enough confidence to blurt out things without thinking first.

Furthermore, it is inevitable to encounter barriers when communicating, since, there is no such

communication that is free from barriers, as barriers are part of the communication process. These
barriers like the internal and external noises will hinder a purposive communication because it will
distract the speaker in imparting his ideas accurately. Therefore, why are these barriers identified and
classified? They were identified and then classified for people to overthrow various conflicts and have a
purposive communication, without knowing these barriers, adjusting to a seemingly distracted
conversation is unlikely to happen, that is why it is important to be aware of the barriers of
communication. Next is one of the factors that shapes a communication which is a person’s perception,
it is how a person perceives or see things, every person has different way of understanding things as
people were raised in different environments, beliefs and values. In order to have a purposive
communication between people with contradicting perceptions is to respect each other’s opinion, to be
patient and to be unbias. Also, nonverbal cues that accompany a person’s words should be
appropriately inclined to what he is saying like gestures, facial expression and more. In addition, using
words with positive connotative meaning is important as well in a purposive communication because if
a person uses negative connotations it might be understood as something that is offensive and
inappropriate. And what purposive communication revolves about is to think before talking and to
choose the right words before speaking. There are also words that other people would interpret
differently, therefore for better communication a person should construct his sentences clearly
without being vague because it can lead to misunderstanding.
