During the latter part of the Medieval Period, secular music which was not bound by catholic tradition
emerged. The Church music started to decline, and secular music became more prominent. Most of the
songs performed across Europe by musicians called Troubadours. The troubadour music was usually
characterized as monophonic, sometimes accompanied by improvised accompaniment, tells chivalry and
courtly love, written in French language and originated in France. The famous composer of the Medieval
Period is adam de la Halle who is known for his Le Jeu de Robin et de Marion. The Renaissance Period
paved the way to invention of printing in the 1400s which lead to the wide distribution of musical composition,
emergence of the bourgeois class, entertainment and other activities for amateurs and the educated. The
Lute instrument was the most prominent instrument during this era. The most prominent composers in the
Renaissance Period were Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina who is known for his commitment in the
composition of sacred church music. He composed the known Kyrie one of his composition which is part of
the first sections of the Pope Marcellus Mass. Another composer of the renaissance Period was Thomas
Morley who is known for his early works towards the compositions of madrigals that show variety of color,

Many writers, Baudelaire among them, considered music as the highest of the arts in relation to
painting and literature, since it remains in the realm of imagination and is not tied to a specific represented
reality (the only exception is programmatic music, of course). Rather than establishing the relationship
between the “arts’ as mere comparison of their similarities and differences, we will focus and elucidate their
mechanisms, starting here with the Middle Ages and moving, in future articles, to the Renaissance and
Baroque. As to relationship between music and painting, painting was at that time also twodimensional, single
line, without any political depth. The represented figures were flat, stylized, without volume or expression.
The binary concepts expressed in in medieval music and paintings find their equivalent in medieval literature.
