Philippine Secular Music: Harana, Kumintang, Pandanggo

Secular music is Non-Religious Music

 Secular Music – refers to any music that is not religious in nature or not
intended for any religious purpose.
 Secular means being separate from religion. Swaying authority from the Church
that is focused more on Common Law influenced all aspects of life, including
music.
Examples of Secular Music:

1. Harana – A serenade; traditionally sung by a man to a woman to express affection as

a profession of his love to her.
 It is sang with emotion and usually accompanied by a guitar.
 It is sang in quadruple meter in danza menor or habanera tempo.
 Some popular Filipino Harana songs are “Ang Tangi Kong Pag-ibig”, “O Ilaw”,
and “Dungawin Mo Hirang”.

2. Kumintang – It originated from Balayan, Batangas.

 It is sang in triple meter with themes of love and courtship.
 It was sung to express love, resentment or a social commentary
 In 1926, when Pasig became the venue of carnival performances, Nicanor Abelardo
was inspired to compose the “Mutya ng Pasig” in kumintang tempo.
 The “Mutya” expresses her feelings under the light of the moon, she is mourning
the loss of her love, which symbolizes the country’s loss of freedom.

3. Pandanggo – is a Filipino version of the Spanish “Fandanggo”.

 Pandanggo is a lively Spanish dance in triple time performed by a man and a
woman to the accompaniment of guitar and castanets.
 Pandanggo is a dance form that can be found in the different islands of Luzon such
as Batanes, Ilocos, Tarlac, and parts of the Visayas.
 It became popular in the 19th century among the elite of Manila.
 It is a form of entertainment in the Tagalog Region called “Pandangguhan” and
performed during social celebrations.
 It is a courtship dance but it can also refer to a type of song to entertain the farmers
in the rice field.
 The singers of this folksong are called “Pandanggeros” and “Pandanggeras”.
