Learning About Matter
Read the poem “ All Things Bright and Beautiful” and try to recite it
with your mother or father and put an action about it.
All things and objects mentioned in the poem are called MATTER.
Objects we see in the park, at home and in school, and objects all around
you is matter.
Objects have colors. Some are brown, green, orange, yellow and red.
Color is a property of matter. Matter has different colors. Rainbow colors are
red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet.
6
Materials may be round, square, rectangular or triangular. Shape is
a property of matter. Some materials have shapes of their own. Others
take the shape of the container.
Materials may be big or small, long or short, thin or thick. All objects
have size. Size is a property of matter.
Materials may also have odors and other materials have no odor or
odorless. Flowers and perfumes have scents while other are odorless.
Materials may have taste like foods. Sour, sweet, salty, bitter and
spicy. Other materials have no taste.
All matter have their similarities and differences in their properties.
They are similar or they differ in their colors, sizes, shapes, textures, odor
and tastes.
Comparing means finding similarities and differences between two
objects.

When we observed the banana closely, you were able to describe its
characteristics. Now, observe the picture of the banana and the big ripe
mango. Compare these two fruits.
Look at the chart. In the chart are the characteristics of each fruit.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?
Matter has shape. Some are round, square, rectangular, triangle and
circle.
Matter has size. Some are big and small. Thick and thin, long and short.
Matter has color. Some are red, orange, yellow, green blue and indigo.
Matter has odor. Some are fragrant, some are foul.
Matter has taste. Some are salty, bitter, sweet and sour.
Matter has texture. Some are rough and some are smooth.
Properties of matter such as color, shape, size, odor, taste and texture
have similarities and differences with one another.
Look and observe each pair of matter. Compare the two and give
their similarities and differences of their properties using Venn Diagram.
Write your answer inside the circle.

Matter and Its Properties
There are may things around us that are beautiful and useful. All ob-
jects and things that surrounds us are called matter. Matter has different
characteristics and these are called their properties.
Matter has shape. Some are round, square, rectangular, triangle and
circle.
Matter has size. Some are big and small. Thick and thin, long and
short.
Matter has color. Some are red, orange, yellow, green blue and indi-
go.
Comparing means finding similarities and differences between two
objects.
In this SLM for Grade One SPED G learners is provided with varied ,
meaningful and some hands –on activities which will be guided with their
parents so they will utilize the science processes like observing, describing,
identifying, comparing and communicating. They are expected to learn
the competency of comparing materials according to observable prop-
erties, (e.g. color, shape, size, texture, odor, taste).
It is hoped that with these materials, the continuity of learning will be
applied, meaningful, fruitful and satisfying to learners.
