B. SAMPLE OF SPEAKING TEST

1. Read out loud the following paragraph and answer examiner’s questions
I'm from Vancouver, Canada and the public transportation is not very good so not as many
people use it as in some other countries where it's more efficient. The bus lines don't go in
the most efficient places and the train systems are very limited.
So if I compare that to that of Japan, the trains in Japan are very efficient and being on a
train in Japan is sometimes it's similar to be being on an airplane in first class. You have a
big seat, comfortable space, snacks, vending machine, washrooms, so I would have to say
that's preferable.
Example:
Examiner: How is the public transportation in Canada?
Student: It is not very good.
2. Topic
Talk about a future mean of transport.
Suggestion:
● What is the future mean of transport?
● Describe it.
● What are the advantages of it?
● Do you like it? Why?
● Do you buy it in the future?

2
C. TEST TAKING STRATEGIES AND MARKING CRITERIA FOR SPEAKING:

1. Part 1: READ OUT LOUD AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS

In this part of the test, you are given A PARAGRAPH. You need to read out loud the
paragraph, then listen and answer 3 examiner’s questions.

The examiner asks the examinee 3 questions according to the paragraph and the
examinee answers
1. How is the public transportation in Canada?
2. Where doesn’t the bus line go?
3. How is about the train in Japan?

2. Part 2: Topic

In this part of the test, there will be given a TOPIC and some SUGGESTIONS. You need
to CLARIFY the topic by using the supporting details and your own ideas.

- Step 1: analyze the topic

+ Find the synonym, phrasal verbs, collocation, etc to change the expressions of the
statement topic
- Step 2: state your answer
+ Introduction, paraphrase the statement.
+ Body: develop the supporting details which are given as nouns, noun phrase, verbs
phrase, etc into sentence. For each supporting detail, present example or further
information.
+ Conclusion: summarize the topic.
Tips:
- Try to vary your vocabulary by using synonym, related words, phrasal verbs, etc,
instead of using given words
Sample:
Students prepare and present briefly in 2 minutes
Traffic jams have appeared in many places of our country. So in the future, many
interesting means of transport will be invented by humans.
My dream means of transport is a smart cycle. In my opinion, it will be powered by
solar energy and wind energy to avoid pollution and save fuel. Two people can sit on it.
We can use it any when and anywhere. It's won't take a lot of space. With the use of modern
technology, this smart cycle will be able to help us many things and it will make our life
3
become better. It will be able to avoid traffic jam, pollution and it help us travel to the sky
more clearly.
In the future, I hope this mean of transport will be come true.

D. REVISION FOR EXAM

1. READ OUT LOUD THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPHS
Paragraph 1:
Education
Education is one of the most important things in our lives. Don’t you agree? It can make
the difference between success and failure. An education can bring us knowledge and make
4
us rich. In rich countries, people are lucky to have good schools. Children start learning
from a very young age. They can further their education and go to higher education or
university. In Japan, there are even private schools for babies to learn English. It’s a shame
that in many rich countries, many children don’t want to learn. Perhaps schools need to
find better ways to teach so children want to learn. It’s sad that in many parts of the world,
children want to learn but can’t. Make sure you never stop learning. Education is the key
to a better future.
Paragraph 2:
I’m going to begin by telling you about my first business trip to Bogota, 15 years ago. The
client I met was very generous and he invited me to his home for a meal. I didn’t want to
be rude, so I arrived on time. I brought some gifts for his wife and daughter and wrapped
them carefully. They didn’t open their presents, so I ask them to. I also asked if they liked
the presents. They said they did. When dinner was served, I toasted my new friend and his
family. The conversation was about culture, soccer, history and literature and seemed to go
well. At the end of the evening, he offered me some coffee. Unfortunately, I don’t like
coffee, so I said no.
Paragraph 3:
Most jobs require people to work in teams. If you do business internationally, it’s good to
understand basic cultural information about team work.
Research shows that East Asian cultures – Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia,
Singapore and China – tend to like working in groups. It feels natural and comfortable in
these societies. They tend to put the group before the individual.
But other cultures value team work, too. Scandinavians – Danes, Norwegians and Swedes
– are good team players. However, teams do not always work closely together in these
cultures. Once team members are given a task, they usually want the freedom to complete
it without too much control.

Paragraph 4
In the case of team working, researchers have found that there are some cultural attitudes
that are similar for the majority of people from Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia,
Singapore and China.
These are societies that usually like working in groups. People in these societies are often
happier working towards team goals rather than individual targets. They are naturally good
team players, and it’s not always necessary to spend a lot time on team-building training
sections. The individual is not as important as the group, and arguments should be avoided.
Team leaders must avoid situations where team members might lose face or lose respect.
Paragraph 5
Doing business in Japan
5
People planning to do business in Japan should know a few things about the country, its
history and its people. First of all, you should hire a good interpreter - someone who speaks
the language and who knows the customs and traditions
Many people in Japan shake hands when they meet, but you shouldn't be too fast.
You should wait and see if they offer their hand first. When somebody gives you their
business card, you should look at it and read it carefully. You shouldn't write on it, because
Japanese people think this is very impolite.
Some advice about meeting - you shouldn't worry about silences during a meeting. You
should respect those silences. And finally, remember that you shouldn't make too much
eye contact.
Paragraph 6
Culture
I’m really interested in the culture of other countries. I don’t know why, but I always think
other cultures are more interesting than my own culture. Every time I travel, I learn
wonderful, strange, amazing and interesting things about other cultures. One of the biggest
surprises I had was when I went to the USA as a child. I’m English so I thought Americans
had the same culture as me. When I went to America I understood Americans and Brits are
very different people. Understanding the culture of other people is very important. It helps
us all to get along. If everyone really tried to learn about other cultures, the world would
be a more peaceful place. The world is becoming smaller, so I think this is happening.
Paragraph 7
Business
Business isn’t so good at the moment. In fact, it’s the worst time for businesses for decades.
Many businesses are going bust because of the global financial crisis. Even sound
businesses like the car industry and electronics are going through a really bad time. Many
small businesses have gone out of business. It’s a real shame because so many lives are
being ruined. With a lot of businesses, it’s a real fight for survival. I really respect people
for trying to make a go of their business. I don’t have much business sense. I wouldn’t
know where to start in opening my own business. I suppose the best thing would be to look
at business startups on the Internet. An online business might be good. There seems to be
less risk.
Paragraph 8
Career
Choosing a career is one of the biggest decisions we make in life. It used to be that we
chose only one career. People would start a job when they were 18, 19 or 20 and stay in
that same career for life. Their career path was quite straightforward. Nowadays, it is
normal for people to change careers, five, six, seven times. New technology and
globalization means things change quickly. We need to study and keep up with all the
changes. I’ve had four different careers now. I like moving from one job to another. It

6
means life never gets boring. It’s much better to keep learning different things in different
careers. I have no idea what career I’ll choose next. Perhaps one that doesn’t even exist
today.
Paragraph 9
E-mail
E-mail certainly keeps me busy. I never used to write as many letters as I do now. In the
good old days before computers, we wrote real letters, with paper and envelopes. I wrote
one or two letters a week. But now, with e-mail, my in-box is never empty. There’s always
someone mailing me. I would like just one day where I’m free of e-mail. The sad thing is,
very few mails I get are interesting. I get loads of spam – junk mail trying to sell me things
I don’t want. I also get lots of mail from people asking me to do stuff. Do this, do that,
reply ASAP. It’s too much sometimes. The one good thing about e-mail is that you can get
things done quickly. I can e-mail a company in another country and they can mail me back
in two minutes.
Paragraph 10
Job interview
Job interviews are always hit and miss for me. Sometimes I have a great interview and get
the job. Other times, my interview bombs and I don’t get the job. It’s really important to
prepare. You must also be confident and make sure the interviewer knows you really want
the job. The trick is to make the interviewer think you are the best person for the job. I
always wear my best suit and arrive early. I always smile when I walk into the interview
room. First impressions are very important. It’s also a good idea to talk about your
experiences - sell yourself. Make sure you have a few good questions to ask at the end of
the interview. Interview technique is something we learn over time – you get to relax more
the more interviews you have.
Paragraph 11
Leadership
Leadership is a word we hear a lot nowadays. Every time we turn on the news we hear
about how important leadership is. Especially strong leadership. American presidents often
talk about the importance of leadership. I suppose they’re right. It’s important that someone
takes responsibility and shows leadership. With the right leaders, we can achieve success.
But not every leader shows leadership. In many countries around the world, there are
corrupt leaders. They do not have good leadership skills; they simply control people by
fear. Good leadership is being respected by everyone and getting the job done. It’s
important to have good leadership in companies too, except many of the banks’ leaders
have not shown such good leadership.
Paragraph 12
Marketing
Marketing is a funny thing. Sometimes I like it, other times I hate it. There is definitely an

7
art to marketing. Some of the advertising campaigns you see are the work of a genius.
Someone has thought of a great idea, slogan and advertising campaign to sell us or tell us
something. I like it when I can see the creativity. There are other kinds of marketing that
make me angry. Ads and campaigns that are directed at children make my blood boil –
especially the McDonalds ads that do not mention food, but show lots of free, cheap toys.
I also hate viral marketing – that’s when you receive spam mail trying to sell you
something. I also get annoyed with marketing campaigns that have slogans that are just
untrue, like smoking is cool.
Paragraph 13
Mobile phone
How important to you is your mobile phone? Do you really need it? In the 1980s there
were no mobile phones. People still managed to phone their family and friends and do
business. Of course, there were more public telephones then. There was a telephone box
pretty much on every street corner. I wonder whether mobile phones are a good or bad
thing. For sure, they are very convenient, but they can also be a nuisance. There’s nothing
worse than talking to someone and then they ignore you for ten minutes while they answer
their phone. I have even seen people on a date and one person chats on the phone for 30
minutes. How would life change for you if you didn’t have a mobile? Would you miss
listening to other people’s conversations on the train?
Paragraph 14
Money
“Money makes the world go round.” I wonder if this famous English expression is very
true. If you have money, the world goes round very gently and you are happy. If you don’t
have money, the world might not go round so smoothly. They also say that “money is the
root of all evil”. I think this is so true. Money makes people kill and steal. Greed means
there are things in the world like blackmail, corruption, slave labor and a lot more terrible
things. Another common saying in English is “money can’t buy happiness”. I’m not so sure
about this one. I know if I had loads of money I’d be pretty happy. I think if all the world’s
money was shared out, the world would go round more happily, and there would be less
evil and more happiness.
Paragraph 15
Management
Management is a funny thing. Most of the people I know who are in management are not
actually managers. I mean, they don’t have any qualifications to say they are managers. I
think most managers are like that. They spend a year or two in a job and then become
managers once the old manager moves on. I’m not sure whether or not you can learn
management. Of course there are things like MBAs that teach you this, but in the end,
management is all about how you deal with people. If you have a personality that can’t
respect people and treat them fairly, you can’t be a good manager. I have worked for some

8
terrible managers. They have no idea what they’re doing and only create lots of work for
others.
Paragraph 16
Public relations
Public relations is becoming a more and more important part of every company. The PR
department in some companies is huge. People in PR have to work hard in getting the
company’s name out there. I guess sometimes they have to lie. I’m not sure if a lot of PR
staff actually believe the advertising of their company. Public relations is also now a huge
part of government. The PR of presidents and prime ministers is carefully managed. A lot
of taxpayer’s money is spent on making sure the leader always looks and sounds good.
They must always say the right thing and have the perfect image. What a waste of money.
When something goes wrong, it’s called a public relations disaster. That means most
governments are public relations disasters.
Paragraph 17
Social networking
What is the big deal with social networking? I don’t understand it. I know a lot about
computers. I spend a long time every day on computers. I also have a lot of friends. But I
don’t see the point of social networks. I joined Facebook but couldn’t be bothered to make
my profile. I can’t see a single use of this site. Most of what I’ve heard about it isn’t so
good. Putting too much personal information on this site isn’t a wise idea. I’ve also
experimented with Twitter, but again, I don’t really see what use it has. I suppose it’s good
to tell the world what’s happening in countries that take away people’s freedom. My idea
of social networking is meeting people face to face and talking to them.
Paragraph 18
Supermarkets
I think supermarkets are interesting places. They are packed with thousands of different
kinds of goods and products. There is an army of workers making sure the shelves are
stocked and everything looks nice. And the prices are usually cheap. The only thing I don’t
like about supermarkets is when I have to pay. I hate waiting in line at the check-outs.
Another thing I hate is when I get a trolley with a wobbly wheel. I really like going to
supermarkets in different countries. Each country has very different things. In England,
you’ll see a huge cheese section; in Japan, you’ll see a whole aisle selling seaweed; in the
Middle East, you’ll see shelves and shelves of dates and olives; and my favorite is India
and the hundreds of colorful spices.

Paragraph 19
Success
How important is success to you? What is success? I suppose it’s different things to
different people. For me, success is having good friends, a loving family and doing well in
my job. For other people, success only means being the best in the world. If a sports star
comes second in the world championship, they feel they are not a success. I have successes
9
every day, especially at work or in my hobbies. If I learn a new piece of software, that’s a
success and I’m happy. Recently I have had many successes in the kitchen. I love cooking,
so every time someone likes my food, I feel it’s a success. I really wish my football team
would be more successful. They’re always on the brink of success, but then fail.
Paragraph 20
Website
Thirty years ago, no one had ever heard of the word 'website'. Today, websites are one of
the most important parts of our daily life. We can't get by most days without visiting one
website or another. We have to log on to a website at work or send an essay or paper to our
teacher. And then there are the websites we use for fun. Millions of people visit gaming
websites every day. They play games with people on the other side of the world. We also
use websites to communicate. We send mail, chat, talk via web cams, and video conference.
Nowadays we even make friends on websites like Facebook and Twitter. Many of us have
our own website. We call it our-name.com and fill it with photos and our thoughts on life.
Paragraph 21
Property
Property is one of the best investments you can make. Of course it depends on which
country you live in. Buying property usually guarantees your investment will rise in value.
If you have a lot of extra cash, you can play the world property market. Places like Dubai
and other areas of the Gulf are good places to buy at the moment. I know lots of people
who have made a lot of money from property. They have several houses and rent them out.
The rent pays the mortgage and after twenty years the house is theirs. I’ve never had any
property. I’m still saving up for the deposit to buy a house. I find the property market to be
very confusing. I don’t like all the hidden costs involved in buying a property.
Paragraph 22
Research
Research is a very important thing. Without research, we’d have no new products. Our
food would be more dangerous to eat. And we’d never go to the moon. I’d like to see my
government spend a lot more money on research. Especially on research into diseases.
Scientists have been researching into AIDS and cancer for years and still have not found
cures. Research into technology is also important. There seems to be loads of research into
information and computer technology. It’s amazing how quickly technology is changing.
We really need to spend more to research how global warming is affecting our planet. This
could be the most important research scientists ever do. Research to save the planet.
Paragraph 23
Qualification
Qualifications are so important these days. Many years ago, a university degree was
enough. A B.A. or B.Sc. would guarantee you a good job. Not now. Not even a Master’s
degree is enough these days. It seems everyone has a Master’s degree. Some of the jobs I
want now require a Ph.D. It’s also not enough nowadays to be happy with the qualifications
10
you have. You have to keep your qualifications up to date, re-qualify, get new
qualifications. It seems life has become one long certificate chase. Especially so now that
many people will have several careers in their life. I know someone who got a degree in
physics, then became an accountant, didn’t like it and studied to be a lawyer. He’s now
studying for his teaching license!
Paragraph 24
Learning
Learning is one of the most important things we do in life. It starts pretty much when we’re
born. In fact, many scientists say learning begins earlier. We listen to the outside sounds.
This is when we first start learning a language. Our ears get used to the different patterns
of intonation. Learning is a lifelong process. We spend our childhood years doing nothing
but learning. We learn a language before we are two. We learn how to play and do all the
everyday things people do. Most people think learning only begins at school. I’m not sure
about this. Are we really learning, or are we just memorizing things? I think a lot of learning
happens outside school. We learn more from our hobbies and interests than what we learn
from school books.
Paragraph 25
Internet
I think the Internet is the greatest invention ever. Think how it has changed the world. So
much information is out there. It has totally changed my life. I can chat with friends,
download music, buy books and get all the info I need for my homework. It took days or
weeks to do any of these things before the Internet. I spend hours every day online. I think
I spend a little too long. I’m sure staring at a computer screen all day isn’t good for my
eyes. I think it’s also making me fat. I need to exercise a little more. The only thing I don’t
like about the Internet is that it can be dangerous. I don’t really like putting my personal
information online, especially on social networking sites like Facebook.
