AFRICAN MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Objectives: To be able to:


i. Define African Musical Instruments
ii. List the 4 categories of African instruments
iii. Identify instruments in each category

DEFINITION OF AFRICAN INSTRUMENTS


African instruments are those objects made from local materials in Africa by the people of Africa that are
capable of producing musical sounds.

CATEGORIES OF AFRICAN INSTRUMENTS

African instruments are grouped into 4 categories based on the sources of sound production of each
instrument. They are:
1. IDIOPHONE
2. AEROPHONE
3. CHORDOPHONES
4. MEMBRANOPHONES

1. IDIOPHONES: This include instruments that produces sounds by striking or shaken the body of
the instrument. They are SELF-SOUNDING instruments. Examples are:
i. Agogo-The Yoruba gong
ii. Une – The Igbo big gong
iii. Ogene –The Efik gong
iv. Sekere- The Yoruba rattle
v. Ekwe- The Igbo wooden drum
vi. Ngedegwu- The Igbo Xylophone
vii. Seeli- The Yoruba plate shaker
viii. Ubo-Aka- Igbo Thumb piano
ix. Agidigbo- Yoruba Thumb piano
x. Udu – The Igbo pot drum

2. AEROPHONES: This includes instruments that produce sounds by blowing air into the
instruments. They are:
i. Kakaki –Hausa long trumpet
ii. Algaita – Hausa double reed clarinet.
iii. Okike – Igbo cow-horn Trumpet
iv. Oja –Igbo flute.
v. Fere-ode –Yoruba hunter’s flute.

3. CHORDOPHONES: This includes instruments that produce sounds by plucking or striking the strings
attached to the body of the instruments. They are:
vi. Goje –Hausa violin
vii. Molo- Hausa one-stringed guitar
viii. Garaya-Hausa three-stringed guitar
ix. Gulum – Hausa guitar

MEMBRANOPHONES
This includes instruments that produce sounds by striking the animal’s skin attached to the body of the
instruments. They are:
i. Dundun -Yoruba talking drum
ii. Sakara – Yoruba plate drum
iii. Akuba –Yoruba up-right drum
iv. Gbedu – Yoruba royal drum
v. Osugbo-Yoruba ritual cult drum
vi. Bembe – Yoruba snare drum
vii. Igbin- Yoruba ritual drum
viii. Bata –Yoruba double face drum
