Theories and Legal Bases

This document discusses several theories that help explain why the relevance of math may impact a student's choice to pursue the ABM strand. It outlines Bruner's constructivist theory which states that learning involves structuring knowledge to simplify and manipulate information. Herzberg's two-factor theory is also discussed, describing how certain job factors lead to satisfaction while others prevent dissatisfaction. The legal bases for the K-12 education system in the Philippines are then reviewed, highlighting laws regarding access to quality education and the roles of different government agencies in implementing reforms.

Related Theories

This section will go through several theories that help to support the idea

that relevance of Math can have an impact on choosing ABM strand to some

extent. In addition, sub theories that explain other findings, such behavior, are

presented after this.

Constructivist Theory. Bruner (1966) states that a theory of instruction

should address four major aspects: (1) predisposition towards learning, (2) the

ways in which a body of knowledge can be structured so that it can be most

readily grasped by the learner, (3) the most effective sequences in which to

present material, and (4) the nature and pacing of rewards and punishments.

Good methods for structuring knowledge should result in simplifying, generating

new propositions, and increasing the manipulation of information. In Burner more

recent work, Bruner (1986, 1990, and 1996) has expanded his theoretical

framework to encompass the social and cultural aspects of learning as well as

the practice of law. Bruner’s constructivist theory is a general framework for

instruction based upon the study of cognition.

Much of the theory is linked to child development research (especially

Piaget). The ideas outlined in Bruner (1960) originated from a conference

focused on science and math learning. Bruner illustrated his theory in the context

of mathematics and social science programs for young children (see Bruner,

1973). The original development of the framework for reasoning processes is

described in Bruner, Goodnow & Austin (1951). Bruner (1983) focuses on

language learning in young children.

This theory is all about how the students adapt the knowledge from the

instructor. In every student's journey, there is always a guide or even an

instruction. This research will serve as a guide to students who need knowledge

about why the ABM strand is very helpful to them.

Sub-theory:

Two-Factor Theory by Frederick Herzberg, a behavioral scientist

proposed a two-factor theory or the motivator-hygiene theory. According to

Herzberg, there are some job factors that result in satisfaction while there are

other job factors that prevent dissatisfaction. According to Herzberg, the opposite

of “Satisfaction” is “No satisfaction” and the opposite of “Dissatisfaction” is “No

Dissatisfaction”. (Herzberg, 1959)

This study wants the students to be more confident in pursuing the ABM

strand. This theory states the way of motivation that make the student become

more productive. The researcher made this study to give knowledge and

motivation to every student.

LEGAL BASES

Republic Act (RA) No. 232 Section 3 also known as the “Education Act

of 1982”this State shall promote the right of every individual to relevant quality

education, regardless of sex, age, creed, socio-economic status, physical and

mental conditions, racial or ethnic origin, political or other affiliation. As well as

extend support to promote the viability of those institutions through which

parents, students and school personnel seek to attain their educational goals.

DepED Order No. 40, s. 2014 entitled “Revised Guidelines on the

Establishment, Merging, Conversion and Naming/Renaming of Public

Schools, and Separation of Public School Annex in Basic Education. ”Part

X of said revised guidelines states that: “Consistent with Republic Act No. 10533,

the Department shall issue a separate DepED Order enumerating the guidelines

on the establishment of a ‘stand-alone’ Senior High School, or the expansion of

an existing high school to offer Senior High School.

Republic Act (RA) No. 10612 Section 17, otherwise known as the "Fast-

Tracked S&T Scholarship Act of 2013, " is an act expanding the coverage of

the science and technology (S&T) scholarship program and strengthening the

teaching of science and mathematics in secondary schools, the Department of

Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Education (DepEd)

hereby jointly issue the following rules and regulations to implement the

provisions of the aforesaid law.

Republic Act 10533 Sections 5 and 6, known as the “Enhanced Basic

Education Act of 2013” clearly states that the K to 12 reform is an effort not

exclusive to the Department of Education (DepEd), but cuts across the whole

landscape of Philippine education and labor, making a unique impact on each

sector, while at the same time requiring all these agencies to work together to

ensure a smooth transition into the new system.

Republic Act 10533 Section 7 Teacher training and education– CHED is

also mandated to partner with DepEd and other institutions for teacher training

and education, including making sure that the curricula of teacher education

institutions meet standards of quality. This ensures that the teachers of the next

generation are equipped to teach young Filipinos under the new K to 12 system.
