Labour Market and Job Search Notes
Labour Market and Job Search Notes
5/ A report by NASSCOM & Mckinsey states that there is a huge gap between the number of
fresh graduates in India versus the number of graduates who are actually suitable for
employment in the IT & BPR industries respectively. This gap is believed to be about 25%
and 15% respectively.
The possible reason for this gap is-
a/ Gap between students’ abilities/interests to their training
b/ Obsession with profession like engineering, medicine, IT, etc.
c/ Soft skills training to the fresh and experienced graduates are neglected
FUNFACT #1
The video mainly focuses on the different aspects of Job Search strategy and its Importance.
We get to learn the following things-
1/ Discovering oneself and narrowing down out search criteria by the following 7 parameters-
a/ Skills
b/ Interests
c/ Potentials
d/ Abilities
e/ Achievements
f/ Ambitions
g/ Values
2/ Importance of Customizing resume and cover letters.
a/ We should write targeted resumes and cover letters that specifically link our qualifications
to the hiring criteria for the jobs we are applying for-
b/ The above point is very important as we will have a better chance of getting an interview
with a targeted resume other than just having a generic cover letter and resume.
3/ List of the same portals where we could help our clients look for the apt Job.
a/ Online Job searching platforms-
The job fairs are popular for companies looking to recruit new graduates
A recruitment agency as a middle man between employees and job seekers could
open new doors to new opportunities.
4/ Developing our Brand
a/ Branding statement- 1 to 2 sentences to summarize our career goals and strengths
b/ Creating online presence to support our brand (Creating video resume, creating URL’s
using our name, etc.)
c/ Ranking well on Google and by maintaining a clean online reputation helps candidates to

d/ Let passion guide us- If we learned one thing from the pandemic, life is too short to be unhappy at
work. We all should do some soul searching. Uncover what our purpose is. What motivates us? What
drives our passion at work? our reasons should be our own—not those imparted by others. Direct our
career. Find our unique purpose, embrace it, and let it propel us.
a/ Make a list of companies we want to work for- When there is an employer you are dying to work
for, take a proactive approach. They may have no openings on their website. Don’t send anything to
HR or recruiters. Use LinkedIn to find the head of the department. It does take time to sleuth out the
right person, but once you do, ask, “Yours is a company I’m very interested in. I’ve done some
research, and my experience includes (list two to three accomplishments), then we should ask for a
conversation. Include our phone number. Do not include a resume. A personal conversation is what
we should be after.
c/ Having the right Mindset- Job seekers must show they are the company's remedy to their problem.
Candidates need to project a consultant approach to uncover the employer’s needs for that role. Then,
show how we are the solution. we do this by clearly demonstrating experience and how we would
bring value to their company.
Conclusion
a/ Remaining persistent with our job search is the key principle to use here.
b/ Maintaining a positive attitude throughout the job search process helps us to be calmer in
difficult situations.
2/ We should try to find and join a professional association whether online or physical
association which is located in the same city we live in
3/ If we can’t find an association near us or online in context to our interest, we can start an
association ourself. We just have to find 2-3 members at first, who share the same interest
as us and could easily start the association
4/ Utilizing professional association /networking and helping clients by making them the
importance of it
The 2 Ares of professional Association we should get involved are-
a/ Membership Committee
Benefits-
Every committee would have different meetings on the basis of weekly, monthly or
quarterly. Programming committee helps the association to organise their meetings
with all members consent and comfortability.
We get hold of speakers on the committee who can enlighten the association on
different topics.
We also get the chance to connect with more individuals on deeper levels. Because
of close interactions
5/ On the other hand we can also form small associations or local clubs where we as career
coaches can be the speakers to a small group of people and could speak on various topics
for free, and in turn the crowd would see us an expert in that field and could turn upon to us
as a client to help them in that specific area that falls under our interest area.
The number of jobs advertised in the newspapers and websites is nothing compared to the number of
jobs that are never advertised. It is estimated that between 70 and 80 percent of the jobs are not
published. So, who gets these jobs? The people who know the importance of networking and network
actively. This means joining professional networks such as LinkedIn, communicating with other
members of the network regularly, and actually going out and talking to would-be employers.
It is no secret that a lot of hiring is done through personal connections, such as friends and
acquaintances. Because of this, you will never get to hear of a job opening unless you know an
employer or someone who knows the employer. Employers place a considerable preference for
candidates they personally know and can trust. So instead of poring over advertisements all day and
sending applications, we should utilize our time networking with professionals, honing up our skills,
and communicating with employers.
Companies do advertise a lot of jobs on job boards and on their websites. But they attract too much
competition because most job seekers have access to the ads.
Professional networking is about connecting with other professionals and sharing knowledge and
information with them. Successful and experienced members of a network often provide free advice
to other members of the networks on the qualifications, skills and experiences needed for certain jobs.
So, regular interaction with other members of the network makes us aware of our capabilities and
deficiencies. We can use their advice to build our professional skills to make ourself more attractive to
employers.
By networking in LinkedIn and Facebook groups, not only can you make new contacts in our
industry, but we can also get guidance and learn new aspects of the industry. We may also find new
tips to help with your job search, resume, and cover letter. You can exchange ideas and learn about
the companies where we would like to work.
By sharing your ideas on industry relevant topics, we are showing potential employers that we know
our stuff. We should attend some social and professional events too. We never know who will be
there that we can impress with our skills and knowledge. They just might have a job opening at their
company.
We could ask our trusted contacts in our industry to review your resume or LinkedIn Profile. They’ll
be able to give us some fresh eyes and provide some feedback. If we connect with industry experts,
they may let us know of new skills and talents that are preferred for the ideal candidate and could help
us grow in value.
