PROJECT 1
On 7 July 2008, George Town were fêted as Malaysia's newest UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This is the first time that
cultural sites in Malaysia have been inscribed into Unesco's prestigious World Heritage Listing. George Town reflect the
blend of influences that result in a unique form of architecture, culture and cityscape incomparable elsewhere in East and
South Asia. The city showcase an exceptional range of shophouses and townhouses from differing eras, providing
snapshots of building styles and types. But what is the George Town Unesco World Heritage Site, what is its history,
where is it, where to get detail information on this matter?
Therefore, Georgetown UNESCO World Heritage ‘Infocentre-Park’ will become a visitor centre that provides information
and in-depth educational exhibits of Georgetown’s history and other items relevant to tourism. The building design shall
provide an integration of visitor servicing / tourist information and community resources in a central location. This building
will serve as the tourist hub of the Penang capital. This landmark will provide a clear connection and integration with the
famous and strategic public and tourist attraction between the esplanade and the Georgetown City.

AREAS/SPACES REQUIRED
Padang Kota Lama or The Padang, is the parade ground and playing field created by the British colonials in the civic
district of George Town. The Padang Kota Lama aka Esplanade is next to the famous Fort Cornwallis in Penang. On one
end is this foodcourt, aptly named Padang Kota Lama Food Court as well. Opposite is the sidewalk by the sea where
one can enjoy both the refreshing breeze and view.
The Hawker Centre By The Bay Project is a refurbishment project whereby students are required to proposed a
transformation of design for the current Padang Kota Lama Food Court which receives high demand from local and
foreign visitors every weekend due to its diversity of food and drinks available at the venue. The aim of this project is to
give a new transformation of environment of the existing design but at the same time they are to maintain the heritage
and cultural value of the unique hawker culture.

THE TASK
The design proposal is looking on how the waterfront can be transformed into a public space, with the objectives of
optimizing accessibility for everyone and increasing safety. The design is based on three main keys: connect,
concentrate and commit, which help to enhance the existing strengths of the waterfront and address its weaknesses. A
continuous beach promenade that acts as a spine by connecting the destinations and the waterfront with existing
walkways and roads shall be its priority. The design language shall be inspired by the surrounding context and the urban
landscape of the city cente which in turn can help improve the well-being of the public.
