OBJECTIVES

1. Ability to design and integrate with due consideration for aesthetic, functional and relationship of different spaces.
2. Ability to further strengthen the knowledge on creativity appropriate massing/form in relation to site.
3. Ability to analyze and respond to environmental or site factors (i.e. land profile, accessibility, climate, vegetation,
neighboring site etc.).
4. Design should include a variety of form, texture, seasonal interest (colour to provide sensory stimulation)

LEARNING OUTCOME

At the end of the course the student will have the:

1. Ability to produce functional and aesthetical design of spaces (A3).


2. Ability to develop concept and approach of complex design principles, needs and requirements (C3).
3. Ability to produce design that integrates technology and response to the climate and environment (P4).

OUTPUT

The students are required to design various types of building ranging from small public building, open air commercial
area to a medium commercial building in an urban context with minimal historical response using medium-span
integrated structure.
PROJECT 1

GEORGETOWN UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE ‘INFOCENTRE-PARK’


FORT CORNWALLIS, PENANG

On 7 July 2008, George Town were fêted as Malaysia's newest UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This is the first time that
cultural sites in Malaysia have been inscribed into Unesco's prestigious World Heritage Listing. George Town reflect the
blend of influences that result in a unique form of architecture, culture and cityscape incomparable elsewhere in East and
South Asia. The city showcase an exceptional range of shophouses and townhouses from differing eras, providing
snapshots of building styles and types. But what is the George Town Unesco World Heritage Site, what is its history,
where is it, where to get detail information on this matter?

Therefore, Georgetown UNESCO World Heritage ‘Infocentre-Park’ will become a visitor centre that provides information
and in-depth educational exhibits of Georgetown’s history and other items relevant to tourism. The building design shall
provide an integration of visitor servicing / tourist information and community resources in a central location. This building
will serve as the tourist hub of the Penang capital. This landmark will provide a clear connection and integration with the
famous and strategic public and tourist attraction between the esplanade and the Georgetown City.

THE TASK

The students are required to design a one-stop resource centre for local/international public/tourist that promotes
Georgetown as UNESCO World Heritage Site in a park setting.

DESIGN REQUIREMENT

 Single storey building (no height restrictions)


 Floor area approximately 100 m2
 Building design must be harmoniously integrated with its environment, locality and context.
 Adapts eco-design, eco-climate and bio-climate design which combines elements of design and aesthetics with
sustainability and ecology which can be achieved by means of landscaping.

‘HAWKER CENTRE BY THE BAY’


ESPLANADE PENANG

Padang Kota Lama or The Padang, is the parade ground and playing field created by the British colonials in the civic
district of George Town. The Padang Kota Lama aka Esplanade is next to the famous Fort Cornwallis in Penang. On one
end is this foodcourt, aptly named Padang Kota Lama Food Court as well. Opposite is the sidewalk by the sea where
one can enjoy both the refreshing breeze and view.

The Hawker Centre By The Bay Project is a refurbishment project whereby students are required to proposed a
transformation of design for the current Padang Kota Lama Food Court which receives high demand from local and
foreign visitors every weekend due to its diversity of food and drinks available at the venue. The aim of this project is to
give a new transformation of environment of the existing design but at the same time they are to maintain the heritage
and cultural value of the unique hawker culture.

THE TASK

The design proposal is looking on how the waterfront can be transformed into a public space, with the objectives of
optimizing accessibility for everyone and increasing safety. The design is based on three main keys: connect,
concentrate and commit, which help to enhance the existing strengths of the waterfront and address its weaknesses. A
continuous beach promenade that acts as a spine by connecting the destinations and the waterfront with existing
walkways and roads shall be its priority. The design language shall be inspired by the surrounding context and the urban
landscape of the city cente which in turn can help improve the well-being of the public.

DESIGN REQUIREMENT

 Single - double storey building (no height restrictions)


 Floor area approximately 500m2
 Building design must be harmoniously integrated with its environment, locality and context.
 Adapts eco-design, eco-climate and bio-climate design which combines elements of design and aesthetics with
sustainability and ecology.
 The building design, its details and materials used must consider all external factors such as high tide, low tide,
wind velocity, climatic factor etc.
 The new design must incorporate a few numbers of new stalls apart from the existing current food stalls with
additional added value factors.

‘PENANG HERITAGE, ARTS AND CULTURAL CENTRE


JALAN PENANG, GEORGETOWN

The Penang Heritage, Arts and Cultural Centre Project involves the design of a building that will provide an integration of
art, heritage design and cultural/educational events take place in its exhibition and informal performance spaces. The
centre includes exhibition galleries, workshop, craft shops, cafes and an art library. It is intended as a venue for cultural
exchange in terms of content, curatorial and cultural management, giving Penang an operational base on the
international heritage scene. The project will become Georgetown next landmark in Penang’s efforts to preserve its
heritage and culture and build new cross-cultural connections that would help promote the city as Malaysia's
newest UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

THE TASK

The students are required to design an iconic Heritage, Arts and Cultural Centre that housed its local arts and heritage
history. The task calls for an adaptable space that can be of benefit to as wide a group of users as possible, hosting
community events as well as serving as a public cultural, heritage and education facility. The building will also need to
provide space for arts advocacy work and cultivate cultural exchange between the country's different ethnic groups.
