How To Connect To A VPN

A VPN allows users to securely access a company's computer network from home as if they were in the office. It works by creating a virtual "tunnel" to the network. To use the VPN, users download the FortiClient VPN app, scan a QR code to set up two-factor authentication with their phone, and then enter their username, password, and rotating 6-digit token from their phone each time they connect. When finished working, users disconnect from the VPN application.

How to Connect to a VPN

Working from home

What is a VPN?
A VPN is a secure connection that allows you to access the City of Salisbury computer network just
as if you were on site. Think of a VPN like a virtual Tunnel back to Council’s premises.

Connect to VPN for daily work

Security of data is of utmost importance when using a VPN, so you will be required to verify your
identity using a secure token from your phone each time you login to the VPN.

NOTE: At this point you need to be using an internet connection that is either your mobile hotspot,
home Wi-Fi, City of Salisbury Free Wi-Fi or Salisbury Guest Wi-Fi (Orange Grove and Docks on site will
not work). Steps 8-13 need to occur each time a connection back to the CoS network via VPN is
required.

7. On your work computer, open FortiClient

application from your desktop

8. Click Remote Access in the left menu
