OM Part4

The document describes operations times for servicing washing machines and applying Johnson's Rule to minimize total completion time. It provides processing times for 6 jobs (A-F) on two machines (Machine 1 and Machine 2). By applying Johnson's Rule to sequence the jobs based on lowest processing time, it determines the optimal sequence is D-A-E-C-F-B. It then constructs a chart showing the job operations, start and end times on each machine. The total completion time is 51 hours with 14 hours idle time for Machine 1 and 4 hours for Machine 2, for a total idle time of 18 hours.

Design a layout on a 2X3 grid that satisfies the preferences listed here

Relationship priority legends between the departments

A - Absolutely Necessary
I – Important
O – OK
U – Unimportant
X – Undesirable -

Number of lines between the department shows the closeness priority.

8. Operations times of servicing of Washing Machines are given below.
The first operation involves cleaning in Machine 1 and the second
operation involves oiling in Machine 2.
a. Determine a sequence that will minimize the total completion time for
this group of jobs, following Johnson’s Rule

Lowest time of Machine 1 assigned to the Left [2hrs] D_ _ _ _ _

Lowest time of Machine 2 assigned to the Right [3Hrs] D____B
Lowest time of Machine 1&2 assigned to the Left
[5hrs] DA___B
Lowest time of Machine 1&2 assigned to the Left
[6hrs] DAE__B
Lowest time of Machine 1&2 assigned to the Left
[8hrs] DAEC_B
only one Job is left (F) DAECFB

Following Johnson’s rule, the Job sequence would be: D - A – E – C – F – B

2
b. Construct a chart of the operations of the jobs at the two
work centres and determine idle time of each line, assuming
no other activities are involved. Processing times (Hrs.) is as
follows:

JOBS A B C D E F
Machine
1 5 4 8 2 6 12
Machine
2 5 3 9 7 8 15

Machine 1 Machine 2
Job
Idle Operatio Time Time Idle Operatio Time Time
s
Time n time start end Time n time start end
D 0 2 0 2 2 7 2 9
A 0 5 2 7 0 5 9 14
E 0 6 7 13 0 8 14 22
C 0 8 13 21 0 9 22 31
F 0 12 21 33 2 15 33 48
B 0 4 33 37 0 3 48 51

Total time for completion : 51 hrs.

For Machine 1, Idle Time : 14 hrs (51-37)

For Machine 1, Idle Time : 4 hrs (2+2)

Total Idle time :18 Hrs (Idle time of Machine 1 + (Idle time of Machine 2)
