2. Determine the nature of the roots of each of the following quadratic functions (Do not solve the equation)
(a) 2x2 − x + 5 = 0 (b) x2 + 4x − 2 = 0 (c) −x2 − 4x + 4 = 0 (d) 4 − 3x2 = 0
3. Determine k so that the given equation will have the stated property, and write the resulting equation:
(a) x2 + 4kx + k + 2 = 0 has one root.
(b) 4x2 − 8kx − 9 = 0 has one root the negative of the other.
(c) 4x2 − 8kx + 9 = 0 has roots whose difference is 4.
(d) 2x2 − 3kx + 5k = 0 has one root twice the other.
(e) 3x2 + (k − 1)x − 2 = 0 equal and opposite.
4. Complete the square of each of the following quadratic functions. Hence, sketch the graph of the function, showing
clearly the x and y intercepts and the turning point. Start:
(i) the line of symmetry, and
(ii) the maximum or minimum value of the function
(a) f (x) = 2x2 − 4x + 5 (b) f (x) = x2 + 2x − 5 f (x) = 4 − 3x2 (d) f (x) = 3 − 7x − 3x2
5. Complete the square of each of the following quadratic functions given below. Hence:
(i) Find the turning point, and the x and y intercepts.
(ii) Sketch the graph of y = f (x).
(a) f (x) = 1 − 6x − x2 (b) g(x) = −2x2 − 12x + 7 (c) h(x) = 2x2 − x − 5
6. Without solving, write down the sums and products of the roots of the following:

10. The roots of a quadratic equation x2 − px + q = 0 are α and β. Form in terms of p and q, the quadratic equation
whose roots are α3 − pα2 and β 3 − pβ 2 .
11. Find the roots of each quadratic equation subject to the given conditions:
(a) (2k + 2)x2 + (4 − 4k)x + k − 2 = 0 has roots which are reciprocals of each other.
(b) (x + k)2 = 2 − 3k has equal roots
(c) kx2 − (1 + k)x + 3k + 2 = 0 has the sum of its roots equal to twice the product of its roots.
12. Sketch the graphs of the following functions on the same axis as that of f (x) = {x}, and find the domain and range:
(a) f (x) =| 2x2 − 4x + 5 | (b) f (x) =| (x + 1)(2 − x) | (c) f (x) = 2 | 3 − 7x − 3x2 | +3 (d) f (x) =| x3 |
13. Solve each of the following

16. Suppose that the equation P (x) = −2x2 + 280x − 1000, where x represents the number of items sold, describes the
profit function for a certain business. How many items should be sold to maximize the profit?
17. The hight of a projectile fired vertically into the air (neglecting air resistance) at an initial velocity of 96 meters per
second is a function of x and is given by the equation f (x) = 96x − 16x2 . Find the highest point reached by the
projectile.
18. Two hundred and fort meters of fencing is available to enclose a rectangular play ground. What should be the
dimensions of the play gound to maximize the area?
19. A hockey team plays in an area with seating capacity of 15, 000 spectators. With the ticket price set at 12 “kwacha”,
average attendance at recent games has been 11, 000. A market survey indicates that for each kwacha the ticket
price is lowered, the average attendance will increase by 1000. What price should the owners of the team set as the
ticket price to maximize their revenue from the ticket sales?
