Rizal's Death

1) Jose Rizal, the renowned Filipino patriot and writer, was executed by firing squad on December 30, 1896 at age 35 after being convicted of rebellion against Spanish rule. 2) On the day of his execution, Rizal was transported to Bagumbayan Field where he faced the firing squad. His last words before being shot were "Consummatumest" (It is finished). 3) Rizal's body was secretly buried at Paco Cemetery. His remains were later exhumed and transferred to different locations over the following decades as the Philippines continued its struggle for independence from Spain.

EPISODE 1

Headlines: After a proclaim trial, Rizal was convicted of Rebellion and condemn to death by
firing squad. Rizal’s public execution was implemented in Manila on December 30, 1896 at age
35. His execution was followed and created more opposition to Spanish rule.
Reporter: Today, December 29, 1986 at 6:00 am, Judge Advocate Dominguez formally read the
death sentence to Rizal. At about 7:00 am, he was transferred to either his “death cell” or
“prison cell”
Rizal’s last favor is to have his family with him for the last time.

 After he heard the punishment, Rizal went to the prison chapel. He also requested to be
with his former professors in Ateneo.
 Among his visitors were Fr. Miguel Saderra Mata, the Rector of Ateneo Municipal and
Fr. Luis Viza. Fr. Viza brought the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which Rizal’s
curved in the school.

Reporter: At 8:00 am, other visitors of Rizal was Fr. Antonio Rosell, they eat breakfast together.

 Lt. Taviel de Andrade also arrived and Rizal thanked his lawyer Santiago Mataix of the
Spanish newspaper El Heraldo de Madrid for his gallant services.
At 9:00 am, Rizal was interviewed.
About 10:00 am Fr. Federico Faura came and advised Rizal that he must forget about his
resentment and marry Josephine Bracken. Rosell witnessed the discussion about religion.
At 11:00 am, Fr. Jose Viclara and Fr. Vicente Balaguer also visited and he remained with Rizal
around noon.
FINAL EPISODE
Before we proceed to SLOW WALK TO DEATH of Rizal, we will flash on screen some clips, and
they are as follow:
Rizal’s letter to his mother

“Inay, sinusulat ko po ang aking huling tula. Patawarin niyo po sana ako. Sa lahat nang naidulot
ko sa inyo, kay itay, sa ating pamilya. Maraming salamat po sa pangunawa. Ilibing niyo po ako
sa lupa; lagyan ng lapida at krus. Lagyan niyo po ito ng aking pangalan, araw ng
kapanganakan, at kamatayan. Huwag na po kayo maglaan ng araw para gunitain ang aking
pagkawala. Maraming salamat po sa lahat Inay. Mahal na mahal ko po kayo.”

After the clip of Rizal writing his letter to his mother, insert clip of the mother reading Rizal’s
letter.

Now, for the news report!


For the headlines, Filipino martyr was executed by a gunshot. “Rizal’s Gunshot Execution”
Newscaster:
It’s December 30, 1896, Wednesday. This is *insert name of newscaster*. You are
watching, Las Pilipinas. I will bring you the most important daily articles with no bias for the
details of the news. The greatest man of the Malayan race, Jose Rizal was shot to death at
Bagumbayan Field by a firing squad.
*insert clip or Rizal walking*
Reporter: At around 6:30 am Rizal was dressed in a black suit; he was taken from cell
and the march to Bagumbayan began. His arms were tired from elbow to elbow, he has a small
black rosary in his right arm and then he put on his black hat.
Reporter: After the march, a colonel took Rizal to the site of his execution. There were
drums at the site just in case Rizal would like to address the crowd. Rizal had requested the
firing squad to spare his head which was granted. He also requested to be shot at his front, but
it was denied. Rizal protested that he is not a traitor of Spain. Dr. Felipe Ruiz Castillo took Rizal’s
pulse and found that it was normal.

“Umibig ka ng tunay… Minahal mo kami ng buo… Mapanatag ka anak ko, hindi
mapupunta sa wala ang iyong pagtitiis at pagmamalasakit sa bayang ito.”

Reporter: Rizal’s last word before he was shot to death was “Consummatumest” (It is finished).
After Rizal was shot there was a medical officer who came into him and he felt that Rizal still
has a pulse. One of the members of firing squad, shot Rizal for the second time. After that, it
was confirmed that Rizal was dead. And then the Spanish spectators shouted Viva Espana!
After the execution, Rizal’s body was secretly buried at Paco Cemetery where later it was traced
by his sister Narcisa.
RPJ was the initials asked by Narcisa to the caretaker of the cemetery to put on her brother’s
marble plaque.

2 years later…
Reporter: On this day, August 17, 1898, Rizal’s name was revealed and were brought to
Narcisa’s house until 1912.

14 years later…
December 29, 1912, Rizal’s remains were transferred from Binondo to the marble hall of the
Ayuntamiento de Manila, where the Knights of Rizal guarded it.
