SECTION C: READING COMPREHENSION (10 MARKS)


Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow
Accidents in the work place
Many people die every year as a result of accidents in the work place. While some
traditional occupations such as fishing and farming are fairly safe, there are still some
dangers. Working conditions are often poor and there are few inspectors and safety experts
to advice farmers and fishermen. Workers do not always wear protective clothing or know
how to use equipment safely. For example, farmers use insecticides to spray their crops.
These are poisonous, but many farmers do not wear goggles to protect their eyes or masks
to prevent them from breathing in the spray.
The construction industry is responsible for many deaths, injuries and illnesses. Some
construction workers labour in dusty conditions without masks or goggles. Accidents
happen during construction work. Builders do not always use suitable scaffolding or
equipment such as proper ladders on building sites.
Welders join pieces of metal through a welding process. This process uses electric current
and a special welding rod. that gives off dangerous sparks. Sometimes welders do not
protect their eyes and hands when they use welding equipment.
There are a growing number of commercial motorcycle riders in Cameroon and not all
drivers are trained to drive safely. In 2013, there were 3933 deaths in the country from
motorcycle accidents alone
Is enough being done to warn people about these dangers? Is enough attention being paid to
the advice of safety officers? What do you think?
