OS Mobile Operating System/s
A mobile operating system helps in running application software on
mobile devices.

10:15 It is a combination of a standard desktop computer operating


system and other added features to facilitate a more handheld use
with a much simpler user interface.

What is a Mobile Examples of devices that make use of mobile operating systems
Operating System? include mobiles phones, tablets, smart watches, etc.

In 1996, Microsoft developed the Windows CE, which was later
renamed to Pocket PC, then Windows Mobile. These devices were
aimed to pull in business and enterprise consumers.

These mobile devices came with enhanced communications
interface using Bluetooth device management. This allowed the

devices Bluetooth file beaming support, Bluetooth headset
support, and support for Bluetooth add-on keyboards. The device
also came with a picture’s application with viewing, cropping, e-
mail, and beaming support added.

Later updates of this Operating system came with more features


and quality of life improvements for a better user experience using
the operating system.

When these devices were released in the mid-2000s, it was aimed 10:17

This was followed by the rise of modern mobile smart phones we


know today with the launch of the first ever iPhone by apple in
January 2007.

The Palm OS, developed by Jeff Hawkins, was one of the very first

1996.

PALM OS
It defined trends and expectations for mobile computing and was
hugely popular in the year 2000, before being discontinued in 2009.

Palm OS was said to be easy-to-use, although it didn’t allow


multitasking.
The Symbian OS written in C++ programming language was

developed by Symbian Ltd. in 1977.

It was primarily utilized by Nokia and by Sony Ericsson, along with

several cellular phones sold in Japan.
In 2017, it dominated the market with 65% in favor of it.

OS Symbian is known for its long battery life and fully encrypted
security. It also has a strong confinement enabling localization of
Symbian-based things.

Following Nokia’s acquisition of Symbian, the Symbian OS will be


spun off as an open-source product offered by the newly formed
Symbian Foundation.
BlackBerry OS was exclusively developed for Research in Motion’s

(RIM) BlackBerry handsets.
As such, only BlackBerry phones can run the BlackBerry OS.

BLACKBERRY
This OS is intended for smartphone use and is best recognized for its
comprehensive support for push internet email provided by the

Messenger (BBM).
Bada OS is a proprietary smartphone operating system created by

Samsung and released in 2009.

Its name originates from the Korean word bada (바다) meaning

“ocean”.

The first Bada phone, the Samsung Wave, was released later in
2009.

Samsung runs Bada OS alongside Android and Windows Phone,


although development of new devices utilizing Bada was secretly
ceased in 2012 in favor of the more popular Android OS.
Tizen is a Linux Foundation-developed operating system that has

received backing from corporations such as Samsung and Intel.

It was from an earlier operating system called Bada, which

Samsung used on some of its first touchscreen phones.

Tizen OS is aimed at smartphones, tablets, and smart TVs.


It enables manufacturers to create apps that function across
several devices.
Sailfish OS, developed by Jolla, is a Linux-based operating system

that includes a closed-source UI based on free software and open-
source projects such as Mer.

SAILFISH
This OS provides a comprehensive solution to governmental and
business users.

OS It is ideal for developing mobile payments and banking, secure


communications and business solutions, and citizen services.

Sailfish OS is not widely used, and its top apps only had about
50,000 downloads.
Ubuntu, a prominent open-source operating system built on a Linux

The OS has been around for a long time and already had several
revisions and updates.

UBUNTU TOUCH Ubuntu Touch was abandoned several years ago but was picked
OS up by a small team called UBports.

It is incredibly safe and dependable and is also well-known for its


stability, which is improved with each release.
Windows phone OS developed by Microsoft Corporation is based

on a compact version of .Net framework.

Its release was significant then for consumers who previously only

Intriguing elements of Windows Phone since initial release include

information on the home screen, rather than the normal
smartphone notification.

However, in 2019, updates were discontinued.


Harmony OS has been under development for several years but has

the United States imposed a trade ban on the Chinese technology
corporation.

HARMONY / It departs from Android and relies on Huawei Mobile Services (HMS),
not Google Mobile Services (GMS).

Huawei eventually revealed the first information about its in-house
OS at the Huawei Developer Conference, but the company wasn’t
ready to show off Harmony on smartphones just yet.
