Pb 13x20cm 352pp col ills £46.25

Despite historical success and international admiration, Danish cities are facing serious economic
imbalances as well as long-term and structural challenges that hamper their ability to maintain a
sustainable development, part of the global crisis of inequality that has impacted cities worldwide.
This book attempts a critical examination of the 20th-century transformation of Danish cities from
industry and traditional trades to welfare cities with the promise of liveability for all. It aims to
inspire a broader understanding of the underlying operative concepts through essays by leading
urbanists, interviews, and selected projects that put the discussion into perspective.

Aires Mateus - Chapel Of Santiago

A+A Books 2022 ISBN 9789895440191 Acqn 32842
Pb 15x22cm 50pp col ills £32.50

According to Portuguese architect Francisco Aires Mateus, the chapel is an old project. The
extended time it takes for such projects to mature allows and nurtures a ceaseless change in both
geography and time itself. The chapel is located in the Alentejo region of south-central Portugal,
in an area closer to the sea. Elements of the project are shared in this small and sober booklet,
such as impressions of the surrounding landscape and drawings by the architect. Catholic
theologian and professor Jose Tolentino de Mendonca contributed the accompanying
introspective text, 'Notes on the Silence of a Place'.

A+A Books 2022 ISBN 9789893325186 Acqn 32843
Pb 18x25cm 348pp col ills £40

In the approach of Portuguese practice Jose Adriao Arquitetos, a perceptive, forward-looking

contemplation of a space serves as a starting point for determining its potential for regeneration.
It is an idea of the future that always contains the past. The places we encounter have neither a
beginning nor an end; they are the product of successive periods of time, layer upon layer. The
idea behind this book was to capture recollections of the continually evolving working processes
that have resulted in various designs and projects. Fifteen selected works constructed in the
decade between 2010 and 2020 are featured which have proven particularly significant for the
studio.

Year Zero to Economic Miracle - Hans Schwippert and Sep Ruf in Postwar West German
Building Culture
gta Verlag 2022 ISBN 9783856764272 Acqn 32855
Hb 22x28cm 380pp col ills £58.50

Postwar West German architecture had to confront legacies from National Socialism and drastic
privation that hampered construction. As industrial production recovered and a middle-class
nation emerged, so too did a new architecture influenced by the American International Style
model. At its center were Hans Schwippert and Sep Ruf. Schwippert, architect of the new Bonn
parliament, worked to align economic redevelopment and a burgeoning consumer goods industry
with design. Ruf, to whom Schwippert directed the commission for West Germany's first World's
Fair pavilion, mastered architectural construction amidst both scarcity and largess.

School Squares - Reinventing the dialogue between school and city

Corraini Edizioni 2022 ISBN 9791254930144 Acqn 32857
Pb 16x20cm 112pp col ills £20.95

The entrance of every school is a place of high potential: in this book Paolo Pileri, Cristina
Renzoni and Paola Savoldi call it "school square" and explore its fundamental role for the whole
city. It's in the space in front of the school that, experiencing the first moments of autonomy, we
elaborate representations and memories of the environment that surrounds us; here the younger
generations directly experience how their rights and needs are considered by our society. That is
why we should urgently focus on the issue of school squares, observing and reinventing these
often neglected spaces: this books invites us to imagine possible solutions to critical situations, in
real contexts - here analysed through the tools of drawing and photography - and takes
inspiration from a number of international examples.

"Unfinishedness" is probably most strikingly represented in works of art, but this issue of 'MONU'
aims to investigate the concept through architecture and urbanism. By addressing its many
different facets, from cities to regions and interiors, and looking beyond the physical structures
and architecture to examine the economic, political, ecological, and social aspects of cities, it
seeks to discover the potential as well as the shortcomings of the unfinished. In this sense,
"unfinished urbanism" is a truly global topic. Despite some success stories, most unfinished
structures remain as symbols of decay, financial hurdles, or corruption in cities, often leading to
further challenges.

nai010 publishers 2022 ISBN 9789462086838 Acqn 32900
Pb 17x24cm 144pp col ills £25.50

The field of architecture's shift towards sustainable thinking in recent decades, from innovation in
energy technologies to the use of circular materials, often places ecological questions outside of
design itself. In its focus on the intersection between ecology and aesthetics in architecture, this
instalment situates the thinking about such issues at the heart of the discipline. Through
examples and projects, it explores the field of tension between architectural aesthetics and topical
themes such as energy, technology, and materiality. Ecological practices in architecture must be
effective in providing solutions while also raising questions about beauty, affections, and
perception.

way up to the present, when the area has come to epitomize the social challenges associated

but rather one of the driving forces behind a changing living environment, the places where we
live, work, and recreate? 'The Power of Landscape' explores various energy landscapes in
