Pre-assessment data
Demonstrated mastery (90% > higher of answers were correct and could explain answer)
Demonstrated understanding, but not yet mastery (80% > was correct but could not fully
explain answer)
Demonstrated some understanding (60% > of the answers were correct but could not
explain answer)
Demonstrated no understanding (60% < were correct and could not explain their answer)
Narrative
The graph above shows how many students demonstrated mastery for each problem on
the assessment. This pre-assessment is the unit 1 summative assessment. This assessment covers
standards that the students learned in unit 1, and unit 2 builds off of unit 1. Unit 1 was review
from 1st grade. The pre-assessment allowed me to see how many students had mastery of the
content that we were going deeper into in unit 2. Because there were some students that did not
demonstrate mastery, I will review those problems during the first few days of unit 2.
The students who showed mastery on the whole pre-assessment will be given a math
challenge to complete. This math challenge is intended to challenge them in solving math
problems that do not look like traditional math problems. The math challenge will most likely
take 30 minutes to complete, so they will work on it when they finish their work in their journals.
Each day there is an extra activity for students to complete when they finish their work that is
connected with the standard for that day. The students need to complete their work, and the extra
practice before working on their math challenge. From this chart, I am also able to see what
students will need extra support in unit 2, and I will know what to expect from students when
implementing instruction during unit 2. This pre-assessment will also assist me in monitoring
Another thing I am able to see from this pre-assessment is how the students respond to
lessons that were taught in unit 1. Some lessons had an emphasis on independent work, and some
lessons were hands-on and had an emphasis on small group work. Each problem on the pre-
assessment came from a different lesson within unit 1. From this assessment, I can see how many
students had better retention from each lesson based on the data presented.
