A little history of Italy

Although the new Italian nation did not appear until 1861, the
geographical area of today's Italy has a rich and long history. In the
pre-Roman period, Greeks and Etruscans settled here. After the
evolution and fall of the Roman Empire, Italy crumbled into several
republics, city-states, kingdoms, all exposed to Muslim, Norman,
German, French, Spanish and Austrian invasions. Italy was united
only in 1861, becoming the Kingdom of Italy. In 1946 it became a
constitutional republic.

The history of Italy is characterized by recurring ups and downs. The

Roman Empire was the first world power and the first advanced
civilization, which appeared quite early in this Mediterranean
country. For centuries, the Romans dominated the history of their
culture, development and military strategy, and laid the foundations
for modern Europe. Despite the fact that the country is characterized
by a long period of ups and downs, because the Roman Empire,
strong Italian city-states and the Italian Renaissance had a significant
contribution to the development of Western civilization. But only
after the unification of Italy and the two world wars did the
peninsula gain its rightful place among European countries.

Italy was the birthplace of many European cultures, such as the

Etruscans and Romans, and of modern cultural movements, most
notably the Renaissance.

The history of Italy is probably the most important in terms of

cultural and social development in the Mediterranean. The country
has been a host of important activities in prehistoric times and
therefore archeological excavations can be found in many regions:
Tuscany and Lazio, Umbria and Basilicata. After Magna Graecia, the
Etruscan Civilization, and the Roman Empire, which came to
dominate this part of the world, came the medieval Humanism and
Renaissance, which later helped to shape European philosophy and
art. The city of Rome contains some of the most important examples
of the Baroque.

Tourism: In 1997 there were 31 million tourists (1994 - 51,814,000),

the revenues from tourism being 50,847.0 billion Italian pounds
(about $ 28 million). Turnover in this area is much higher, over $ 80
billion. Tourism concentrates 8% of the entire active population of
Italy, one of the highest shares in the world. Italy has over 1.7 million
accommodations in hotels, motels and boarding houses.

The country is, in 2019, the third most visited in the world with 94
million visitors according to ENIT, with a number equal to 217.7
million foreign visitors and a total of 432.6 million visitors. According
to the Bank of Italy's estimates in 2018, the tourism sector directly
generates more than 5% of national GDP (13% also taking into
account indirectly generated GDP) and represents over 6% of
employees. As of 2018, Italian cultural sites (including museums,
attractions, parks, archives and libraries) numbered 6,610. Active
hotel units are 33,000, while non-hotel units are 183,000. resorts is
53%; the best equipped towns are Grosseto for agrotourism (217),
Vieste for camping and tourist villages (84) and Cortina d'Ampezzo
for mountain refuges (20).
Tourist destinations

What can you visit in Italy as a tourist?

Italy is a dream place, from wonderful history to landscapes, food,

people, streets, it is a place full of history, full of breathtaking sights.

The capital of Italy is Rome - the city on the banks of the Tiber River
has been the capital of the Roman Republic for centuries. Today,
Rome is an important tourist center and a city full of historical
monuments of Roman, Etruscan, Renaissance and Baroque origin.

The famous Colosseum in Rome is the most important example of

Roman architecture we have today. An amphitheater of great
proportions, built of cement and stone, which managed to last
almost 2000 years, even if during this period a large part of the
structure was affected by the relentless passage of time. The
Colosseum remains the most famous and largest arena ever built by
the Romans. Emperor Nero was the one who came up with the idea
of building it, wanting something grand that would gather the urban
population to gladiatorial fights, extremely popular in those days.
nearby, from Tivoli and almost 300 tons of iron to tie the blocks
together. As a precedent for modern prefabricated materials, many
of the components of the Colosseum were built elsewhere and
brought to the site of the arena for assembly. This method allowed
an accelerated work pace that led to the construction of the building
in only 7 years.
Venice- is a wonderful and evocative city, understandable and
intensely experienced, but a careful choice of activities will make
your trip unforgettable. Venice, one of the most romantic places in
the world, is located in northern Italy, along a lagoon located near
the Adriatic Sea. The city comprises 117 small islands connected by
water channels during which gondola rides are made, famous all
over the world.

The main way to navigate Venice is the Grand Canal, which winds its
way from St. Mark's Square to the outskirts of the city. Along the
Grand Canal you can admire the most beautiful palaces in Europe,
built by wealthy Venetian merchants. The main attractions of the city
are the Grand Canal, St. Mark's Square and Basilica, the Doge's
Palace, the Bridge of Sighs, the Rialto Bridge, the historic districts:
Castello, Cannaregio, San Polo, Santa Croce, Dorsoduro, with
countless architectural, artistic and cultural treasures.
Roma- is at the top of the list of the most popular places to visit in
Europe. Rome is indeed a true museum of humanity, the historical
site, the famous monuments, the tourist infrastructure, the Vatican
city, the exceptional traditions, etc., determine the development of a
real tourist industry. Rome is visited annually by over 30 million
tourists from around the world. The relics of its ancient glory - the
Colosseum, the Forum, the Pantheon, the Appian Way and the
Palatine Hill - face the immense riches of the Vatican as top
attractions.

"Rome had an empire long before it had an emperor," wrote

historian Adrian Goldsworthy in his book "Pax Romana: War, Peace
and Conquest in the Roman World."

Rome is a true museum of humanity; the historical site, the famous

monuments, the tourist infrastructure, the Vatican City, the
exceptional traditions, determine the development of a real tourist
industry.
Sicily- is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, located south of
mainland Italy, right at the top of the "boot", being separated from it
by the Strait of Messina. Sicily has won seven UNESCO World
Heritage Sites, three for its ancient sites, two for natural wonders
and two for architectural treasures. Some of the best examples of
ancient structures are in Sicily. The culture and traditions of the
island of Sicily are well known throughout the world, the Sicilians
being great keepers of traditions, no matter in which part of the
world they migrated. Today, the famous "Sicilian mafia" has begun to
lose ground in the face of protests from ordinary people and the
actions of officials. But more than that, Sicily is a land where
throughout history many civilizations and cultures have mingled:
Normans, Aragans Spaniards, North African Moors, ancient Greeks,
Phoenicians and Romans. Gela - one of the most important ancient
Greek cities and seaside resort on the south coast of the island;
Marsala - the homeland of the famous wine; Mazara del Vallo - here
you will find Arab influences, including a Couscous festival; Messina -
the connection of the island of Sicily with the continent of Italy;
Palermo - the capital of the island, full of tourist attractions. Among
the most famous seaside resorts is Taormina, an important tourist
center with a Greek amphitheater that offers beautiful views of
Mount Etna and the Sicilian coast. The landscapes of Sicily, crowned
by Mount Etna, and its spectacular golden sand beaches match its
world-class attractions.
Capri- the small mountainous island of the Tyrrhenian Sea, famous
for its unique landscapes, is located at the entrance to the Gulf of
Naples.

Called Caprea in ancient times, the island of Capri has been colonized
by the Greeks since the 7th century BC. In the two major cities of the
island, Anacapri and Capri, there are ruins that attest to the presence
of Greek colonies on the island.

The rugged cliffs and crystal clear waters of the small island of Capri
seem to be created directly from dreams and mythology. So, it is one
of those places to visit in Italy that you can't miss. The island of Capri
is said to have been the place where the seductive mermaids sang to
Odysseus and his sailors in Homer's "Odyssey." The island is visited
annually by over half a million guests. There are three major towns
on the island of Capri. The main settlement is Capri, a small town
located in its eastern part. The picturesque Marina Grande harbor is
on the north coast, and Anacapri rises to the west.A popular way to
see the natural wonders of this southern Italian island is by boat.
Popular attractions such as Blue Grotto, Green Grotto and Faraglioni
can be seen during a short trip around the island.
Siena- the medieval heart of Tuscany, Siena is attracting tourists with
Gothic cathedrals, beautiful towers and delicious pizza. Siena is one
of the most visited cities in the world, with over 163,000
international tourists in 2008. The city is famous for its local cuisine,
art, museums, medieval landscapes and horse races - Il Palio - which
take place between July 2 and August 16. Also here is the oldest
University in Europe. Siena flourished in the Gothic period - the
cathedral and the many palaces in Siena are architectural
monuments of the Gothic style, and the soil in this region - ideal for
bricks - led to the majority use of brick in construction. Sienese
painters of this period had such a delicate and graceful style that
they surpassed even those in Florence. For those visiting Siena, there
are plenty of beautiful architecture such as Palazzo Pubblico and
Torre del Mangia. In addition, the city has a number of fantastic
museums and galleries, such as the Siena Civic Museum and the
National Gallery. The historic center of Siena is one of the best
preserved in the region and is a real joy to explore. Siena Cathedral is
one of the first pieces of Gothic architecture in all of Italy. Piazza del
Campo is without a doubt the main square of Siena - this beautiful
open square contains simply stunning architecture and is always
buzzing with local life and tourism. Torre Del Mangia - this 102 meter
thin tower stands proudly at the end of Palazzo Pubblico and is one
of the city's most famous attractions.
The beauty of Italy- in conclusion

Italy is a country that has a lot of amazing tourist destinations. It is a

popular destination for people all over the world. This is because
they have such an interesting history and culture. Italy has been an
important part of the world for centuries and this is true today.

I lived in Italy for a year, but I was a child, however it is a place you
