Improving English Skills Seminar

Yesterday I attended a seminar, It discuss How to improve English Skills, It was my


first experience met all the participant that had the same purposes. This seminar &
workshop had three speakers, that shared many experience by themself.

The seminar held on Language Center UNS, at 09:00. In the opening ceremony, all
the participants sang Indonesia Raya, and the seminar opened by Mrs Fitria, Mr
Warto, and Mr Agus.

The first speaker is Mrs. Arni Ferra Sinatra, S.Pd., M.Pd. She explained enhancing
writing skill through time-writing, the difference of speaking and writing, the
importance of writing, time management, and made exposition together.

And now I knew the difference of speaking and writing. In speaking, we would get
direct responses (direct feed back), In writing of course we wouldn’t get direct
responses. I knew some benefits of writing, we used writing to expressing our feeling,
to get a job. Writing is a need, that’s why we had to practice writing skill. We must
strengthen the skill because examination in writing is usually time, there would be an
limited time, we had to decide what should we write. She also talked about time
management, 10-15% of time used for prewriting, 70-80% used for writing, and the
last 10-15% of time used for proof-reading.

After Mrs.Arni’s session finished, there were Parallel 1 and Parallel 2, I entered B
Room, it was 3 speakers from Translate Mainstream, 1 speaker from Language
Mainstream, and 2 speakers from Linguistic Mainstream. Each of them had a topic,
such as Analysis of Persuasive Language’s Translation in Magelang’s Bilinglual
Tourism Promotional Material Entitled Katalog Pariwisata 2018 Magelang Kota
Sejuta Bunga: Tourism Catalogue 2018 Magelang, The City of A Million Flowers ;
Onomatopoeia: A study of Translating Sound Effect in “Donald Duck - Superduck”
Comic ; The Techniques Used For Translating Indonesian Slang Words Into English:
A Case Study In “Perahu Kertas” Novel ; Heterogeneity of Trauma in Roxanne Gay’s
an Untamed State ; Metaphor of Emotion Analysis in Adele’s Songs ; Verbal
Representation of a Transgender in Interviews.

The second speaker is Mrs. Dyah Ayu Nila Khrisna,S.S,M.Hum. She talked about
Thesaurus.
Benefits of thesaurus as she said, To avoid word repetition and monotonous overuse
& to recall the temporarly lost words. She told about 6 things to ponder, such as
gramatical patterns, collocations, frequency, register, connotations, formality.

On this session, I felt the time was running fast, I don’t know why I listened to her
seriously. Maybe, for me this session was so excited, she explained clearly, so I
understood with the topic, although I don’t know some words.

And in the last session, third speaker is Mr. Sean Stellfox, MATESL. He talked about
Websites and Applications to Improve English Skills. He recommended the
participants with 11 websites and applications to make their practice easily. Mr Sean
also taught how to used that websites and applications.
This session, is so excited.
Mr Sean is a good speaker, he is easy-going. The way he talked was supported the
material in his session. I also understood with the topics.

In this seminar, I’d got many benefits to Improve my english skill, I’d got many new
lesson, such as made one exposition text, listened about six examples of six persons in
the B room, tried to search the synonyms of some words in the online dictionary,
knew the benefits and the purposes of thesaurus, knew some websites and apps which
supported myself to improve my english skill.
