Computing Professionals

Assignment # 1

Code of Ethics and Privacy

Muhammad Abdullah Qureshi 221-437659

Code of Ethics

These are the core values adhered in a professional environment. It helps the people of
workplace conduct work with honesty and integrity. These principles are subject to many
factors like geo-politics, culture, and the kind of firm, thus making them subjective. These
discussions come under the ambit of meta-ethics where we talk about the thought process or
the reasoning for drafting the code of ethics.

Privacy

“Privacy refers to personally identifiable information about an individual or an organization.”

(Lec-4 Slides)
It alludes the ethical dilemmas encountered by computer users, where they evade the privacy
of others. One use case of this is, an IT department supervisor monitoring employee’s activity
on their computers. Another example will be of using someone’s PC, it would be violation of
privacy if you go through the private files.
It also means usage of tracking cookies, malwares and adwares to monitors someone’s PC
using internet.

How code of ethics and privacy affect your use of

computers at university being a student?

Practical Example 1:
There are cases when I have to go to the information commons room and get a PC for xyz
work. I have to adhere to the code of ethics of the IC room, e.g. I can’t enter the room without
the mask on to protect everyone and myself from the COVID-19, etc. In order to protect my
privacy I tend to use incognito mode in internet browsers so that my passwords, personal
information does not stick around. If I am using a word processor or any other file, I make
sure to put it on cloud storage. Lastly, I delete the file from the physical disk.
Second of all I try my best to not peek on other’s activity on their PC.
Practical Example 2:
There are cases when I have to get a print of some assignment from the print shop on campus.
I have to adhere to the code of conduct of the shop, where I have to wait in the queue for my
turn. Subsequently, I have to enter the shop with the mask on. Now in order to get the print, I
retrieve the file from cloud data storage, so in order to sign-in to the cloud storage, I have to
open incognito mode. After getting the print, I delete the file from the physical disk.
