Starbucks

Starbucks Corporation Inc.is American based worldwide coffee chain founded by Jerry Baldwin,

Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker in 1971. The Company

headquartered in Seattle, Washington and it is one of the largest

chain having 33,833 stores spanning 80 countries as such Canada,

India, Spain, Germany. The main products of Starbucks are hot and

cold drinks, micro-ground instant coffee, espresso, tea, juices,

Frappuccino beverages, pastries, and snacks. Starbucks recently

introduced their merchandise including mugs, tumblers, scoops, and Washington, United States

coffee presses. Starbuck is a global leader and consists of several business activities including

inbound logistics, outbound logistics, Marketing, Sales, and Service. Starbucks primarily operates

and competes in the retail coffee and snacks store industry.

Starbucks is a coffee chain and consist of various kitchen operations including prep production,

cooking, packing, storage, inventory, maintenance, cleaning and handling of kitchen equipment

which require standard safety procedure. In terms of safety Starbucks has introduced several safety

program for their partners like Unprecedented Mental Health Benefit in which mental health

benefits to $5,000 per year for their workers , who work a minimum of 20 hours per week, and

their dependents and it is one of the highest mental health benefits offered by company in Canada

across all industries.


Assessment

1) What is the current “Safety Climate?” Describe in detail whether it is positive or

negative and why, be sure to include specific examples

Presently, Starbucks has great potential to prevent from workplace injuries because of their

effective leadership, non-blaming mindset of employee and personal commitment. Employees

have positive perception towards approaches of safety as Starbucks has emergency medical care,

First aid kits, safety norms and standards. For instance if any worker injured during kitchen

operations Starbucks has special arrangement to provide primary treatment before admitting to

hospital and bear all the medical expense of worker. Meanwhile their health and safety

management team find root cause analysis of incident.

2) Is training required for employees? If so, provide specific details on the objectives

and the evaluations.

Training is vitally important factor for any organization in order to maintain healthy and safer work

environment. Starbucks usually provide robust safety trainings for all

partners and employees as such how to de-escalate situations, active

shooter training, mental health, first aid training. The main objective of

training is to minimize workplace injuries, accidents, suffering and

financial hardship. Starbucks conducts training of two to four weeks in

order to enhance productivity as well as morale of employee. Starbucks Fig 2 Starbucks training program

chemical exposure, handling of tools and tackles, electrical injuries, use of personal protective

equipment, Fire extinguisher and personal safety.


3) Are there any current H&S Management Systems in place? If so, provide details.

Starbucks is a well renowned brand and it has their own effective health and safety management

system which not only ensure safety of employee but also applicable

for their customers and environment. Starbucks is known for their best

health policies and safety norms which reduce the risk of injuries and

illness. Starbucks adopted and implemented new methods to protect

health and well being of their partners and guided by health agency of

Canada and provincial governments.Starbucks conduct safety induction

4) Where do you see examples of employees both complying and participating in

safety?

There are plethora of ways where we can employees of Starbucks complying and participating in

safety as Starbucks is a coffee chain based industry; therefore

anyone can visit their store and assess their employees. Usually

employees follow all safety norms as such use of personal

protective equipment , wear gloves and facial coverings. Besides

employees of starbucks participate in various actvities as such

all rules and regulations are being followed by all employees.
5) How are risk assessed/managed? How could this be improved?

Starbucks has significant professional who assessed risk to identify

potential hazards, evaluation of risk and plan to deal minimize on job

injuries, breakdown of equipment and kitchen mishap. Starbucks use

various techniques like Job safety analysis in order to identify hazard

and to determine measure to overcome hazard. For instance Starbucks

assessed the risk by looking closer at those areas where something can

go wrong. The best way to improve risk management in Starbucks is to

have a streamlined order of operations in line with kitchen operations, and by providing adequate

training to staff.

6) How is safety managed overall?

Overall Starbucks is highly conscious for safe and healthy work

environment with necessary rules and regulations regarding working

condition. Starbucks consist of latest safety protective systems as like

Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and sprinkler systems to manage

safety and how to respond in case of emergency. To exemplify Fig 6

in case of sudden fire. Their workplace policies as such Drugs and alcohol, violence and

harassment, training program, and management systems ensure and managed the safety.

Analysis

Overall health and safety system of Starbucks is good. Starbucks allocate a huge amount on

health and safety program and incorporated best safety measures and policy for the safety of

their workers and customers.


Conclusions and Recommendations

In conclusion Starbucks has incorporated effective health and safety management system however

during peak hours possibilities of accidents and mishap increased in kitchen due to excess food

orders and heavy workload on employees; therefore it is recommended that Starbucks should adopt

new techniques for multiple handling of new food orders and introduce new training program to

prepare their employees and enhance flexibility of their workers.
