The Practice of Religion: Belief in
Supernatural Being and Power

Religion refers to beliefs and behaviors related to supernatural

beings and powers. Worldview is broader than religion.
Worldview refers to the collective body of ideas that members
of a culture generally share concerning the ultimate shape and
substance of their reality. Religion also differs from spirituality,
which is a concern with the sacred in an individual manner.
(Haviland, 2007).

physical part where it is connected to the body and second
is the spirit where it exist on its own.

Body is the matter and Soul is the form

 It could travel outside from the body.

 What happens to the body happens to the soul
 Has second meaning in bisayan culture which is
WILLPOWER

 Rituals in the Philippines are quite common. Visayan
fishing villages practice the offering ritual called
harang. A local shaman invokes sea-spirits. There are
several stages of the ritual purification, invocation,

Finding meaning and Creating meaning
in life

 Logotherapy – aims to help the person to search for the meaning

of his existence.

Three basic principle on discovering meaning in life

1. Meaning in Life – In logotherapy it means finding meaning in life

events and circumstances. Even at times of great loss and deep
sorrow. In this view that suffering is part of life which cannot be
avoided and that meaning is still possible.
Finding meaning and Creating
meaning in life
 2. Will to meaning - The meaning to life that one
attaches to experience is not obvious.
 it varies from person to person
 Meaning of life or the will to meaning could vary at any
given moment.
3. Freedom to Will – People are given the freedom to make
life choices which includes how they respond to life
events. People can discover meaning through the values
that they attach to things connected by their lives.
Finding meaning and Creating meaning
in life

 The first basic principle is that life has

meaning in all circumstances, even
despondent ones.
 The second principle is that the main
motivational force is the desire to find
meaning in life.
 Lastly, the third basic principle states
that humanity has the freedom of
attitudinal choice, even in situations of
unchangeable affliction (Frankl, 1959)
