PRIMER DEPOSITION BY CATHODIC DIP COATING OR
AUTOPHORETIC COATING

1. Introduction
1.1 Object

This specification determines the minimal qualitative requirements for cathodic dip
coating (cataphoresis) or autophoretic coting primers on parts that are not directly
exposed to UV from sun or to the weather and when the colour is not important.

The use of autophoretic coating (autodepositon) is only allowed by AGCO Beauvais

Engineering.
For this process, Aquence 866 or 930 series coating products by Henkel shall be
used for our applications.

1.2 Prescription on drawings

Primers covered by this specification shall be designated as follows:

"Primer deposition according to CMS M1075"

1.3 Reference documents

CMS M1000: Paint System Performance Specification

ISO 2409: Paints and varnishes – Cross-cut test

ISO 2812-2: Paints and varnishes – Determination of resistance to liquids – Part 2:
Water immersion method
ISO 9227: Corrosion tests in artificial atmospheres – Salt spray tests
ISO 6860: Paints and varnishes – Bend test (conical mandrel)

ASTM D 609: Standard Practice for Preparation of Cold-Rolled Steel Panels for
Testing Paint, Varnish, Conversion Coatings, and Related Coating Products.
ASTM D 2247: Testing Water Resistance of Coatings in 100% Relative Humidity
ASTM D 3359: Standard Test Methods for Measuring Adhesion by Tape Test
ASTM D 3363: Standard Test Method for Film Hardness by Pencil Test

2. Application
Primers answering to this specification have to be convenient for the coating of
cleaned bare metallic surfaces.
Pre-treatment of steel parts before primer coating has to be in accordance with the
metal pre-treatment prior to paint described in AGCO specification GD10000101.

3. Specifications
Primers answering to this specification and applied to test panels specified in section
4 shall satisfy the following specifications when inspecting them to the naked eye.

3.1 Colour

There is no requirement on colour, but it has to be compatible with the top coat.

3.2 Visual appearance

Primer shall achieve a smooth and uniform coating without harmful defects, and shall
cover integrally the subjacent material.

3.3 Thickness

Thickness of dry film has to be comprised between 15 and 30m.

3.4 Cross-Cut Test

The primer, when tested using a crosshatch to ISO 2409, shall show no lifting or
flaking: classification 0 to 1.
Note: Current primers that have been approved using ASTM D3359 are still valuable,
but ISO 2409 is the method to be used for new primer validations.

3.5 Pencil hardness

The primer applied with on a test panel shall have “H” pencil hardness minimum
when tested to ASTM D3363.

3.6 Flexibility

The primer applied to a test panel shall show no cracking or peeling beyond the 6mm
diameter mark immediately after bending around a 3.1mm conical mandrel as
according to ISO 6860, with the following parameters:
- temperature: 20 ± 1 °C
- relative humidity: 65 ± 5 %
- bending period: 15 to 30 seconds

3.7 Water Resistance

The primer applied on a test panel shall show no wrinkling / blistering immediately
upon removal after being immersed in distilled water held at 37 ± 2 °C for 500 hours
in a chamber according to ISO 2812-2.

3.8 Gazoline Resistance

The primer applied on a test panel shall show no wrinkling, blistering immediately
upon removal from immersion for 24 hours in a mixture of 2/3 automotive gasoline
and 1/3 White Spirit held at 20°C.

3.9 Diesel fuel Resistance

The primer applied on a test panel shall show no wrinkling or blistering immediately
upon removal from a 24 hour immersion in diesel fuel held at a temperature of 20°C.

3.10 Hot Oil Resistance

The primer applied on a test panel shall show no wrinkling, blistering immediately
upon cooling after removal from immersion for 24 hours in straight oil (SAE 10W40
grade) held at 80°C.

3.11 Humidity Resistance

Conduct the test according to ASTM D 2247.

The enamel shall show no rusting, blistering, loss of adhesion, chalking or dulling
immediately upon removal after an exposure at 100% relative humidity using the
following test:

Cycling temperature in heating from 42°C to 48°C occurs over the first 30 minutes of
each test hour and cooling from 48°C to 42°C occurs over the second half of each
hour for a 72 hour period.

3.12 Salt Spray Test

The primer system (primer applied on a test panel and properly cured) is first scribed
by 2 scribes forming a V which penetrate to bare metal with a 200 to 250m width
knife; then it is tested to neutral salt spray test according to ISO 9227 or equivalent
for 700h. Upon removal from the test chamber the paint system is rinsed with water.
After 3 hours air dry an adhesive tape is applied on the scribe and pulled off. Maximal
permissible rust creep shall not exceed 1mm from either side of the scribe line.

4. Test panels
4.1 Panels

All test panels shall be in low-carbon and polished cold rolled sheet steel, of 1 mm
thickness (Type 2 according to ASTM D609, or equivalent), and of a convenient
dimension for the test. Surfaces of test panels have to be free from rust or traces of
oxidation.

4.2 Preparation of the panels

Before the application of the primer test panels must be carefully cleaned according
to the method D of ASTM D609 (or equivalent).

4.3 Primer coating

The primer shall be coated in order to have a film similar to that obtained with the
plant production process. Thickness of dried film shall be comprised between 15 to
30m.

4.4 Primer drying

Primer applied on test panels shall be properly cured before being tested according
to the test methods of this document.

5. Manufacturing products
In case of blinded, drilled or threaded holes with a diameter ≤ 10mm, suppliers have
to mask them before coating to avoid assembly problems!
