[BNTERED AT STATIONERS’ HALL]OBJECTS OF THE WORK.
Tue Author of the “ Book of Bible Characters” has long felt the
want of some school-book in which the more subordinate, as well as
the principal characters of the Old and New Testaments should be:
presented in a short and simple form for juvenile learners ; and bavin;
prepared the present little work for his own pupils, it is now offere
to others who have also desired such a manual.
In order to keep the descriptive portion short, only one or two
prominent circumstances have been mentioned under each name;
and some events connected with characters previously introduced
have been inserted under other characters ; thus, the circumstance of
Josiah persisting in going to war with Pharaoh-Necho is related
under his own name, while thatof his being in disguise is introduced
under the name of Pharaoh-Necho.
It may be thought that there is a deficiency of information on the
more important characters ;—but it is not the object of this publica-
tion to enter into numerous particulars respecting Abraham, David,
Daniel, St. Peter, St. Paul, &c. Those characters of whom much
is recorded are generally well known, while those which are seldom
mentioned in the Scriptures are almost neglected, and are most
liable to be overlooked.
Many of the minor characters at the same time present beautiful
examples for imitation, and consequently convey impressive lessons
to the mind and heart. The firm reliance of Jabez—the tenderness
of Rizpah—the modesty of Vashti, are instances of this kind. Some
of the minor characters are also equally important, in conveying
warnings of sins to be avoided ; while others are introduced, in order
to make the ordinary reading of the Scriptures intelligible and
profitable. (Psalm Ixxxiii. 9, 10,11.) The reading of this Psalm
cannot be understood unless something be previously known of the
persons mentioned therein.THE BOOK
