OMAM Chapter 5-6

George justifies shooting Lennie by telling him a story about the farm they were going to buy. When George finds Lennie hiding in the bushes after killing Curley's wife, George shoots and kills Lennie. George does this both to protect Lennie from being lynched by the other men and to allow Lennie to keep his dream of tending rabbits on the farm they discussed. While killing Lennie seems cruel, George believes it is the most compassionate action given the circumstances and helps Lennie avoid a likely violent death at the hands of the other angry ranch workers.

Part A:

2. Underline other sentences with “that” clauses.
What are some factors that lead to immigration to big cities?
A century ago most people in the world used to live in rural areas. Most people had farms and they made
a living mainly with agriculture and led a relatively sedentary lifestyle. However, after the Industrial Revolution
many people moved to big cities in Europe. In the last fifty years many people have moved from rural areas to
urban centers in Turkey, too. This means that various factors contribute to the immigration to big cities. Today,
the two main factors which lead to immigration to a big city are education and career opportunities.
One main factor motivating people to move to a big city is that modern people need better education. To
begin with, it is possible to find the best teachers and professors in big cities because there are better high
schools and universities there. Moreover, there are more opportunities for scientific research in larger cities.
Therefore, students may go to these schools to learn from the best scholars. For example, people like famous
philosopher Karl Popper and historical sociologist Anthony Giddens were all professors in LSE in London. In
addition, in metropolitan areas there are many options for people who need a good education whether they are
the best students or not. Unlike small towns where students can apply to only one university, several reputable
schools can be found in big cities. To illustrate this point, Istanbul has more than 25 universities. Students who
live in Istanbul can study wherever they want. In short, many people immigrate to big cities for the best
education in the greatest schools from the best academics.
Another factor leading to immigration to mega-cities is that people have far better job opportunities than
they ever could in small towns. Firstly, there are many companies and they need many qualified employees.
For example, Istanbul offers career opportunities in numerous different sectors. That is, potential employees
may find jobs in banks, food factories, internet service providers, retailers, etc. In contrast, a small town may
have only one or two companies and a few options for potential employment. Secondly, in a large city it is
possible to build better careers and to have higher salaries due to the fact that employers paying better exist
there. For instance, some of these may be international corporations such as Unilever, P&G, Mercedes and
Henkel. According to TÜİK, a statistics institution in Turkey, the white collar employees in Istanbul are getting
paid three times as much as white collar employees living in other cities in Turkey. As a result, potential
employees immigrate to big cities for better jobs and better pay.
In conclusion, the most significant factors that lead to immigration to mega cities are that big cities offer
better education and better opportunities for employment. This is why so many people have moved from rural
areas to the urban centers and why they will continue to immigrate to them.
