Chapter I

Introduction

Background of the Study

According to Sapbamrer et. al. (2022), the COVID-19 pandemic has created a serious
human health crisis. The COVID-19 had infected over 247 million people as of November
3,2021, and was responsible for the deaths of 5 million people globally. COVID-19 has infected
over 1.93 million persons in Thailand, causing in 19,394 million deaths. To prevent COVID-19's
rapid spread, governments around the world have implemented public health measures such as
lockdowns, quarantines, and travel restrictions. Although the measures are highly effective in
preventing disease spread, they have had an effect on a range of sectors, including public health,
transportation, logistics, education, socioeconomics, and agriculture. In terms of agriculture, the
agricultural business around the world was incapable of dealing with a crisis like COVID-19.

A study emphasized the impacts of COVID- 19 on vegetable production in Burkina Faso

in terms of both the biophysical and socioeconomic aspects (Middendorf et al., 2021). The
results showed that vegetable systems amidst the pandemic are losing income, a reduction in
yields, reduced access to local and urban markets, reduced access to transportation, and an
increase in post-harvest loss. The results of the study solidified the idea that the global food
market will suffer when the farmers are also suffering.

A study by Mthembu et al. (2022) demonstrated that COVID-19 lockdowns accompanied

by movement restrictions negatively impacted the food production of staple crops. The COVID-
19 pandemic also affected vegetable farmers in terms of vegetable production and marketing in a
negative way (Rathnayake et al., 2022). To minimize the impacts of COVID-19 on farmers, it is
necessary to assess the effectiveness of measures to deal with this crisis (Adhikari et al., 2021).

A qualitative study in Ormoc City, Philippines, by Tan et al. (2021) revealed that
Farmers' marketing activities were greatly disrupted—the disturbances include decreased buyer
options, logistic constraints, and reduced prices. Coupled with the increased production cost, this
led to labor displacement in search of better welfare.
A blog created by Brul (2021) revealed that the lack of transportation to import raw
materials and manufactured products greatly disrupted farm and business operations, causing a
snowball effect on the productivity of the Philippines ' economy.

Based on the results of different studies, it's clear that farmers across the world are
struggling from the impacts brought by the COVID-19 studies. This study is being conducted to
determine the adversities encountered by the local farmers during the pandemic. The analysis of
this study will also present information on the relationship of COVID-19 to the farmers'
livelihoods and develop coping strategies that would minimize the adversities they are suffering.

Statement of the Problem

The study aims to determine the adversities experienced by Molave's local farmers during
the time of the pandemic as a basis for the development of coping strategies.

2. What are the difficulties experienced by the local Molave farmers during the
pandemic?

3. How do small-scale farmers and agricultural laborers in Molave respond to the

COVID-19 crisis?

strategies to minimize the negative impacts of this ongoing pandemic on the agri-food systems
and support smallholder farmers to overcome stress caused by the pandemic.

Future Researchers. The results of this study can be used for future discussions and lend
support to future studies that wish to conduct a similar study.

Scope and Limitation

The study will cover the adversities experienced by Molave's local farmers during the
time of the pandemic. The qualitative study will be conducted at different farming fields in
Molave, Zamboanga del Sur. The primary subjects of this research study will consist of the local
farmers under the municipality of Molave. The study will be delimited to ten (10) local farmers
of Molave. The participants will be coded as Participants A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, and J. The
