Every person in the world must be educated about different cultures since almost a

hundred or even a thousand cultures exist in the world. Being culturally diverse would help a
person to interact with many people all around the globe and prevent cultural disrespect. Cultural
ignorance is one example of disrespect in one’s culture.

As stated in the quote, cultural ignorance leads to lost opportunities and tension between
cultures. It can even hinder intercultural communication and nation-building due to the ignorance
of a person or group of people of another culture. An example of how it can affect nation-
building is when a particular culture in a country is not given any importance or discriminated
against by a group of people or another culture due to the lack of knowledge results in tension. A
specific example of this is when a wedding is conducted between Igorots; in the Igorot culture,
they tend to prepare a big feast with a lot of food, and they even butcher many pigs or beef as a
part of their ritual. Many people or other culture outside the Cordillera views this tradition as
“wasteful,” and they often judge those who posts about this kind of ritual and tradition on social
media platforms. Thus, creating tension between other cultures since they view the wedding
culture of the Igorot as “wasteful” without understanding that it is part of their tradition.
Situations like this do not only lead to tension but also disrupts the nation and community
building since it hinders the relationship of the Igorot culture to other cultures.

Another example is the way the middle eastern are portrayed in social media, and the media is
very discriminatory and hateful against them. Since they are being portrayed as “bad,” other
cultures tend to discriminate against them and their culture, including their clothing, traditions,
and eating habits. Various videos are spreading on social media about the eating culture,
specifically in India, and many people are judging them and saying they are unsanitary. This
leads to the disruption of nation-building since people from other cultures are being judgmental
and discriminating against the eating culture of other countries without understanding its context.

Every person in the world must educate themselves with their own effort to become
familiar with a different culture. Other individuals knowledgeable about various cultures must
educate people to prevent such things from occurring, with the different cultures and their
significant traditions to prevent cultural ignorance and discrimination against them since it
hinders nation-building development and intercultural communication.
