ASSIGNMENT MAT560 - Unknown

The document is an individual assignment on calculating the trajectory of water spray from a fire hose. It provides equations for position, velocity, and acceleration in 2D and 3D space. It then presents a problem where a firefighter sprays a building from 45° above ground level at 40 m/s. It solves for: [1] the maximum height of 41.73m reached at 2.883 seconds; [2] the horizontal distance traveled of 163.93m; and [3] that the spray would pass the 10m height of the targeted building from 150m away.

INTRODUCTION
Motion in space in the unique chapter that we have in vector calculus. In this Motion in Space, we
will focus on the mathematical tools that we used in physics. In this chapter also we will learn how
to find velocity and acceleration. We began the formula with the vector function which is r(t). It is
represented as displacement of an object at time t.
𝑟(𝑡) = 𝑥(𝑡)𝑖  +  𝑦(𝑡)𝑗 + 𝑧(𝑡)𝑘

Above is the vector – valued function. From r(t) we can find velocity and acceleration by
differentiating r(t). The velocity of this object is.
𝑣(𝑡)  =  𝑟 ′ (𝑡)

Speeds are the most important component for the calculation of object velocity. The formula used
in finding the speed value is |𝑣(𝑡)|. Differentiation methods will be used in finding acceleration.
Then, the formula for position, velocity, acceleration, and speed will be provided in the table
below.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Figure 1.1

Based on figure 1.1 a firefighter was firing water at a burning building 150m from the building. In
this situation, the firefighter directed the fire hose from ground level at a 45° angle. When
firefighters fired a stream of water into the burning building, the water pressure released was high
with a speed of 40 m/s. The fire hose water is hit 1m above ground level. Whether the water flow
released from the fire hose water managed to extinguish the fire in the burning building with a
height of 10m.
What is the maximum high does water spray water rises?

How far does hose spray water travel horizontally?

Whether hose water spray managed to pass the building which is 10m and located 150m away
horizontally.
SOLUTION
ℎ = 1𝑚,  𝑉0 = 40𝑚/𝑠,  𝜃 = 45°,  𝑔 = 9.81𝑚
1
𝑟(𝑡) = (𝑉0 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃)𝑡𝑖 + [ℎ + (𝑉0 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃)𝑡 − 𝑔𝑡 2 ] 𝑗
2
𝜋 𝜋 1
𝑟(𝑡) = (40 cos ) 𝑡𝑖 + [1 + (40 sin ) 𝑡 − (9.81)𝑡 2 ]
4 4 2
b)
Differentiate r(t)
𝑟 ′ (𝑡) = 20√2𝑖 + [20√2 − 9.81𝑡]𝑗

𝑦 ′ (𝑡) = 20√2 − 9.81𝑡 = 0

20√2
𝑡=
9.81
𝑡 ≈ 2.8832 𝑠

Substitute value of t into y(t).

𝑦(𝑡) = [1 + 20√2(2.8832) − 4.91(2.8832) 2 ]

𝑦(𝑡) = 41.73𝑚

∴ 41.73𝑚 𝑎𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑚 ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑖𝑟𝑒 ℎ𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑝𝑟𝑎𝑦 𝑎𝑡 𝑡 =  2.883𝑠.
c)

𝑥(𝑡) = 20√2𝑡

𝑦(𝑡) = 1 + 20√2𝑡 − 4.91𝑡 2

= (𝑡 + 0.0351)(𝑡 − 5.7957)

𝑎𝑡 𝑡 = 5.7957

𝑥(𝑡) = 20√2(5.7957)

= 163.93𝑚

∴  163.93𝑚 𝑎𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 ℎ𝑜𝑟𝑖𝑧𝑜𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑖𝑠 tan 𝑐 𝑒 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒 ℎ𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑝𝑟𝑎𝑦

d)

150 =  𝑥(𝑡)  =  20√2𝑡

𝑡 =  5.303

𝑠𝑢𝑏𝑠𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑢𝑡𝑒 𝑡 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑜 𝑦(𝑡)
𝑦(𝑡) = 1 + 20√2(5.303) − 4.91(5.303)2

= 1 + 150 − 138.09

= 12.9𝑚

∴  𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑠𝑝𝑟𝑎𝑦 ℎ𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑎𝑔𝑒𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑝𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑢𝑖𝑙𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 10𝑚
