1-Essay Explanations

The document discusses declining health and increasing obesity rates in many countries. It identifies two main causes: poor diets with excessive fast food and packaged meals, and lack of physical activity due to more sedentary lifestyles. While individuals need to change their behaviors, governments also have a role to play. They can restrict unhealthy food sales through taxes and bans, and boost activity by building more sports and recreation facilities. Together, personal choices and policy measures can help address weight gain and related health issues.

In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of fitness

and health are decreasing. What are the causes of these problems and what measures
could be taken to solve them?

Nowadays, the levels of fitness and healthiness are declining in many countries
owing to the rapid rise in the obesity rate. While this has resulted from people’s poor
diets and lack of physical activity, governments can not only prohibit the sale of
unhealthy food products but also encourage people to work on their health, to
improve public health.

1] Nowadays, the levels of fitness and healthiness are declining in many

countries owing to the rapid rise in the obesity rate. [controlling issue: paraphrasing

the topic by changing the structure and some phrases]

2]While this has resulted from people’s poor diets and lack of physical activity,

governments can prohibit the sale of unhealthy food products but also encourage

people to work on their health, to improve public health. [position: presenting my clear

opinion/position by briefly introducing both body 1 and body 2]

The health issues are caused by a combination of two factors. The first reason could
be the over-consumption of fast food and packaged meals as they have recently
integrated into people’s diets. Since those kinds of foods contain a lot of greasy
ingredients, calories, and chemical additives, eating them excessively might cause
people to gain extra weight, thus developing susceptibility to obesity, as well as high
blood pressure, and diebates. On top of poor diet, people also lack physical activity
thanks to the recent changes in society. Not only have most people become
addicted to smartphones and computer games, but they have also forgotten the
importance of regular exercise and activity, thereby burning fewer calories and
gaining more weight. Clearly, individuals need dramatic changes in their eating habits
and lifestyles.

1]The health issues are caused by a combination of two factors. [topic sentence:
presenting the central idea of the paragraph [two factors]].
2]The first reason could be the overconsumption of fast food and packaged meals as they
have recently integrated into people’s diets. [The first idea/reason: presenting the first
reason and explaining why it is so important]
3]Since those kinds of foods contain a lot of greasy ingredients and chemical additives,
eating them excessively might cause people to gain extra weight, thus developing
susceptibility to obesity, as well as high blood pressure and diabetes. [Explanation and
extension: not only explaining why fast food and packaged meals are causing obesity,
but also extending the argument with the further effects of eating too much
unhealthy food].
4]On top of poor diet, people also lack physical activity thanks to the recent changes in
society. [The second idea/reason: presenting the second reason with linking it
properly to the previous sentence [lacking physical activity].
5]Not only have most people become addicted to smartphones and computer games, but
they have also forgotten the importance of regular exercise and activity, thereby burning
fewer calories and gaining more weight. [Explanation and extension: explaining how and
why lack of physical activity is leading to obesity]
6]Clearly, individuals need dramatic changes in their eating habits and lifestyles. [body
conclusion: concluding the paragraph logically]

Nevertheless, there are feasible ways in which these problems could be tackled.
First, politicians have the power to ban the sale of fast food and unhealthy meals by
imposing draconian taxes, penalties, as well as strict restrictions. This, in turn, may
lead people, albeit indirectly, to go on a healthier diet. Second, governments should
take on the responsibility of establishing more sports facilities and parks to
encourage people to do daily exercise and walk. The sooner these solutions get
implemented, the easier people can rise out of obesity and other health conditions.

1]Nevertheless, there are feasible ways in which these problems can be tackled. [topic
sentence: presenting the main idea of the paragraph [feasible ways]].
2]First, politicians have the power to ban the sale of fast food and unhealthy meals by
imposing draconian taxes, penalties, as well as strict restrictions. [The first idea along with
its explanation: not only presenting the first solution, but also explaining how to
implement it].
3]This, in turn, may lead people, albeit indirectly, to go on a healthier diet. [extinsion:
extending the argument by presenting a possible effect]
4]Second, governments should take on the responsibility of establishing more sports
facilities and parks to encourage people to do daily exercise and walk. [The second idea
accompanied by its explanation: not only putting the second solution forward, but
also explaining how to implement it].
5]The sooner these solutions get implemented, the easier people can rise out of obesity and
other health conditions. [Body conclusion: concluding the paragraph]
In summary, unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity result in obesity and
negative health conditions which can be dealt with through the governments taking
proper measures.

1] In summary, unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity result in obesity and
negative health conditions which can be dealt with through the governments taking proper
measures. [Conclusion: briefly mentioning the points given in both body 1 and body 2]
