Monroy ATD-300 Installation Manual Rev. 3.0 05-01-10
1.0 General
The ATD-300 Traffic-Watch+ is a passive receiver capable of detecting transponder
replies from nearby aircraft and displaying their range, direction (with ANT-300 antenna)
and altitude on an 8-character dot matrix yellow LED display. It also provides distinctive
voice warnings in relation to traffic proximity. The ATD-300 has a detection range of 5
nautical miles. The system consists of a receiver/indicator unit, antenna, power cord
and headphone cable. The receiver is housed in a small aluminum box (2.75” x 0.75” x
5.0”) for easy location in the cockpit.
The ATD-300 provides distinctive voice warnings for traffic at different ranges. When set
in the FAR mode and traffic is within 3nm and +1,000ft of vertical separation "Traffic"
will be annunciated. As the traffic gets closer to about 1nm and within +1000ft of vertical
separation the message will change to "Traffic Nearby". When set in the NEAR mode
only traffic within 1nm and +500ft of vertical separation will be annunciated by "Traffic
Nearby". When set to MUTE there is no warning messages for any traffic, however
traffic range and MSL altitude will still be indicated. When there is no traffic activity the
ATD-300 will automatically indicate the host transponder MSL pressure altitude. A
screwdriver adjustable volume control is located on the bottom side of the unit. Audio
output to headphones (300 ohms) is provided on the rear of the unit.
The ATD-300 features a built-in voltage-warning indicator that lets you know if the
aircraft supply voltage is out of range. This function works on the background all the
time and is activate after engine start. If an out of range condition exist the ATD-300
annunciates it by voice and by text.
The ATD-300 can either be used in the portable or installed configuration. In the
portable configuration the unit can be quickly set-up for use. Portable antenna, cables
and Velcro strips are provided for a quick set-up.
The ATD-300 can also be permanently mounted in the panel with the use of an external
antenna (ANT-300). This configuration adds traffic direction capability with the ANT-300
antenna. Audio output can be connected to the aircraft audio panel for convenience.

1) Connect the provided rubber antenna to the rear BNC connector on the unit. Align
the antenna vertically.
2) Find a suitable space on top of the glare shield where the ATD-300 is accessible and
not blocking the pilot's view and the antenna is not in contact with the windshield or
airframe structure.
3) Clean well this glare shield location and stick one of the Velcro strips provided. Stick
the other strip to the bottom side of the unit. Make sure the strip does not block the
VOL adjustment hole.
Note: The ATD-300 can also be located on the overhead panel with the antenna
pointing down. However, depending on the surface the Velcro strips may not provide
long time support.
4) Plug the cigarette lighter power cord to the rear center connector of the unit. Plug the
other end to the cigarette lighter jack in the aircraft.
5) Plug the headphone cable mini-plug to the rear connector on the unit. Plug the other
end 1/4" plug to the aircraft headphone jack. Connect the pilot's headphone to the
pigtail phone jack on the cable.
Note: If the aircraft is equipped with an intercom system or BOSE ANR headsets
connect the 1/4 plug to the emergency headset jack for better results. The pilot's
headphones can be connected to their respective phone jacks in the aircraft.
6) Turn on the A/C master switch. Set the ATD-300 left switch to NEAR. Turn the unit
on (right switch up). After two seconds you should hear "Traffic Watch On". Adjust the
volume control on the bottom side (see fig.4 page 10) if it is to high or to low, use a
jeweler's screwdriver. Clockwise rotation increases the volume. Repeat the above
until desired audio level is achieved
7) Affix the ATD-300 to the glare shield. Route the power and headphone cable so they
do not interfere with the operation of the aircraft.
Note: During the summer, the ATD-300 may get too hot to the touch if exposed to the
sunlight when the aircraft is parked outside. It is recommended that it be covered
with a chart or equivalent when parked outside. If the unit gets too, hot it may not
work properly until it cools down.

4.3 Wiring
The ATD-300 will operate from any DC voltage source (negative ground only) between
11 to 30 volts. If there is no audio system in the aircraft the ATD-300 can drive
headphones directly.
1) Install 1 amp circuit breaker or inline fuse connected to the aircraft avionics bus. (see
Fig. 5) Use AWG 22 wire or heavier gauge for all power connections
2) Connect the ATD-300 center conductor of the power connector (center connector) to
the circuit breaker. Connect the connector shell to ground. (see Fig. 5).
1) Run a piece of RG-58A/U coax cable between the antenna and the ATD-300. The
cable length should be less than 20ft long. Make sure the cable routing does not
interfere with flight control systems. (see Fig. 5)
2) Attach the BNC connector provided to the cable end at the ATD-300. Follow
connector installation instructions on the connector bag. Connect this end to the ATD-
300 antenna connector.
3) Attach the corresponding connector (typically BNC) at the antenna end. Connect this
end to the antenna.
For most audio systems or audio panels this procedure will provide audio to the
headsets and cockpit speaker without the need of a dedicated speaker.
1) If connecting the ATD-300 to an audio system or audio panel, use the phone output
provided on the ring contact of the mini-plug connector. (see Fig. 5)
2) Connect the phone output to the warning input or un-switch input (pin T in KMA24) or
a spare input in the audio system (see mfr. audio system inputs diagrams). If no
spare input is available the ATD-300 can be paralleled with the COM or NAV phone
inputs. (see Fig. 5)
3) After connection check audio output by turning the unit on. Upon initialization the
message "Traffic-Watch On" should be heard. If audio level needs to be adjusted
insert a jewelers flat screwdriver in the hole located on the bottom side of the unit and
rotate it clockwise for more audio or counter clockwise for lower audio. Turn the unit
off and on to hear the voice message again.

Use this procedure only if the aircraft has no audio system or audio panel.
1) Connect the ring contact of the mini-plug (phone output) to the headset phone jack.
The ATD-300 phone output can be paralleled with the COM or NAV phone outputs.
2) After connection check audio output by turning the unit on. Upon initialization the
message "Traffic-Watch On" should be heard. If audio level needs to be adjusted
insert a jeweler’s flat screwdriver in the hole located on the bottom side of the unit
and rotate it clockwise for more audio or counter clockwise for lower audio. Turn the
unit off and on to hear the voice message again.
To prevent wire disconnection at the ATD-300, bundle the power and audio wires to the
antenna cable and secure them with a ty-wrap about two inches from the connector.

1) Pull the aircraft out of the hangar into a ramp area where airborne traffic is visible.
4) After unit initialization, verify it reads bus voltage with no traffic around.
5) Set the left switch to FAR and check for traffic activity in the area. If traffic is within
3nm the voice should be heard announcing "traffic"
6) Turn the transponder on and verify its reply light is blinking after two minutes warm-
up.
7) After two minutes the ATD-300 should indicate the transponder pressure altitude. If
the transponder has no altitude encoder the ATD-300 will indicate the squawk code.
8) Verify the ATD-300 indicates traffic relative altitude with a + sign in front of the
altitude number. The above will not be indicated if there is no altitude encoder
onboard.
9) Set the left switch to NEAR and verify that voice annunciation "traffic nearby" occurs
only when traffic is within 1nm and less than +500 feet relative altitude
10) Set the left switch to MUTE and verify that there is no audio for any traffic indication.
11) Set the right switch to DIM and verify that the display dims.
12) Traffic direction on the ground may not be accurate due to signal multipath reflection
from nearby structures. Depending on antenna location extended landing gear
doors and cowl flaps may affect coverage or traffic direction accuracy.

7.0 Troubleshooting
There are no serviceable components in this product. The test equipment needed to
test is very specialized and it is not commonly found in avionics shop. If you encounter
difficulties please check the following suggestions:
1) If no power check voltage directly at the power connector using the connector
ground contact.
2) If no voice output, verify that the VOICE switch is not in the MUTE position. Plug a
miniature plug headphone on the back of the unit and turn the unit on. If message
"Traffic-Watch On" is not heard adjust the VOL control on the bottom side of the unit,
clockwise rotation increases volume.
3) If you suspect occasional false alarms check the following: Turn off any onboard cell
phone. Turn off the strobe lights. Some unshielded strobe light wiring may cause
spurious emissions that may be visible on a weather lightning scope. Keep in mind
that most GA traffic will not be visible during daytime when farther than 1nm. Ground
radar stations use transponder beacons on the ground (Parrots) to check for
antenna azimuth and proper radar operation. When flying near one of these beacons
you may get traffic warnings but no visible aircraft. The ATD-300 can easily detect
traffic at lower altitudes or on the ground that is beyond ground radar horizon line
coverage thus not visible to ATC.
4) At times the ATD-300 will show the range and altitude of two aircraft in an alternate
fashion. This is normal and helps you determine if there is more than one threat.
Display priority is given to traffic at the closest indicated range.
5) The ATD-300 local altitude reading may not be the same as that indicated by the
altimeter when the atmospheric pressure is different than 29.92". This is because
transponder altitude encoders are calibrated to 29.92".
