GIS as web applications

​ Introduction
The aim of this exercise is to learn how to use an online web application oriented to
process the geo-coded data.
Download a package (.zip) of compressed files with a map into your local hard disc.

Start working with the GIS application:


1. open the web application: studio.mapbox.com
2. create an account: Sign up for Mapbox
3. login to your account

​ Tasks
Task 1 - Create a map style
1) In Studio, create a new style - New Style:
● Choose a template,
● Choose a variation,
● click Customize.
2) In the Components tab, according to your preferences you can:
a) hide components using an icon in the menu,
b) customize objects in the map using available switches, colours, combo boxes, etc.,
c) select colours in the Colors tab for objects,
d) select typography in the Typography tab for objects.
3) In the Layers tab, according to your preferences you can:
a) hide layers using an icon in the menu,
b) modify how the object is displayed by configuring:
a. Text,
b. Icon,
c. text position (Position),
d. icon placement (Placement).
4) In the menu bar, click in the text field on the right to the Styles and change a name
of your map.

Task 2 - Add a new layer


1) In the Studio, pick your style in a list of styles

a) click an icon in the menu,


b) Upload data,
c) Select a file,
d) pick the file downloaded at the beginning of this exercise.
2) When a new layer appears in a list of layers, you can customize it:
a) change a name of the layer - click in the text field on the right to the icon ,
b) in Text tab, modify:

a. Text field,
b. Color,
c. other configuration options as you prefer.
c) in Icon tab, modify:
a. Image,
b. Size,
c. other configuration options as you prefer.

Task 3 - Create a new layer


1) Create a CSV file with a few geo-coded records for e.g. bookshops, fast/slow food
bars, faculties, etc. This database can have the following structure:
latitude longitude name
52.40809674291088 16.915692691105484 Collegium Minus
or
latitude longitude name opinion
52.4 16.9 Global Pizza super!
Remark: You can read the latitude and longitude coordinations using another GIS software
(e.g. Google Maps).
2) In Studio, select the Datasets menu:
a) click New dataset,
b) click the Upload tab,
c) select a file,
d) wait till a dataset appears in a list of Datasets,

e) click an icon ,
f) click Export to tileset.
3) In Studio, select your map style and then:
a) repeat steps as in task 2 using a name of the tileset created in 2).f),
b) in the Text tab, click Insert a data field,
c) select a field that describes your locations.

Task 4 - Publish your map

1) In Studio, click an icon in a line with your map,


2) Click Make public,
3) Click Details,
4) Click Share,
5) In the Production tab, copy a web link for Preview only from options of Share style,
6) You can modify this link to center the map with your geo-coded data every time you
request the map. Change the coordinations, i.e. two decimal number (e.g.
…/48.8/22.3), at the end of this link.

Upload:
● this link,
● CSV file of the database (task 3-1))
to the Moodle environment, e.g. eKursy (e-Courses).
