Slope Sensor and IMU Install and Calibration

Installation and Calibration

Install IMU Sensor Bracket
The following tools are recommended for IMU bracket installation.
• Cutting torch
• Welder
• Open end wrench and socket
• 3/16in Hex Allen Wrench
1. Locate the machine’s moldboard. The moldboard is the portion of the blade assembly that tilts with the
blade in slope, rotation, and forward pitch. The moldboard does not move sideways with the blade.
Figure 22 shows a typical machine with the moldboard outlined in red.

The appearance of the moldboard is machine dependent, and varies significantly from machine to
machine. Check for the cylinder that pitches the moldboard forward and backward, which is useful
when locating the moldboard.

Figure 22: Example of Motor Grader Blade Moldboard

When the blade rolls forward, tilts sideways, rotates, or changes in elevation, the bracket moves with
the blade. However, the bracket does not move sideways with the blade.

3D-MC2 Software Setup

Installation and Calibration

To utilize 3D-MC2 for Graders, create a new machine builder file and select MC-R3 w/ 3DMC2 as the Sensor Input
for the motor grader. If you are adding 3D-MC2 for Graders to an existing machine, use an existing machine builder
file, and change Sensor Input to MC-R3 w/ 3DMC2.

Machine Measurements
Measure the machine dimensions as shown in the machine builder of the 3DMC software. Measurements should be
as accurate as possible.
1. Place the blade on the ground, and pitch it to the most common grading position.
2. Loosen the bolts on the L-bar, and adjust the mast or vibration pole so the antenna mast is vertical.
3. Use a bubble level or plumb bob (or theodolite/total station) to ensure the antenna mast is vertical.

Initialization

Installation and Calibration

There is an additional initialization step for 3D-MC2 for Graders. Ensure that the blade is in a relatively flat position
(cross slope and blade pitch) prior to starting the system.
Allow the system to sit still for 10 seconds while 3DMC² Initializing appears on the main screen (Figure 31).

Figure 31: 3DMC2 Initializing

The system initializes for the following reasons.
• After connecting or reconnecting the 3D-MC2 sensor.
• When a new machine builder file is opened.
• When the system is first powered on.

Blade Mainfall Slope Calibration

The blade mainfall slope (or blade pitch) must be set to 0.0% when the antenna mast is vertical, and the blade is in
the most common grading position.
1. Place the blade on the ground, and pitch it to the most common grading position.
2. Adjust the blade so the blade cross slope in 3DMC reads 0.0%.
3. Loosen the bolts on the L-bar, and adjust the mast or vibration pole so the antenna mast is vertical.
4. Use a bubble level or plumb bob (or theodolite/total station) to ensure the antenna mast is vertical.

Tightening the bolts at this step may skew the vertical accuracy. Adjust the machine measurements
if necessary.

Valve Offset Calibration
For 3D-MC2 for Graders, set the offsets the same as a standard motor grader. If you are not familiar with setting the
offsets on a standard grader, begin by setting the offsets to where the blade just begins to move. If the blade seems
too reactive for small errors, reduce the offsets slightly. If it seems too sluggish to respond to small errors, slightly
increase the offsets.
1. Raise the machine blade so that both sides of the cutting edge rest a few inches above the ground.
2. In 3DMC, tap Topcon LogoControlBlade calibrationValve offsets. The Valve Offsets screen
appears (Figure 34).

Figure 34: Control Menu – Valve Offsets

3. Engage Auto.
4. Tap the Set button to change the current Valve Offset value.
5. Use the on-screen arrows to increase or decrease the value or tap on the numerical window to bring up
the on-screen keyboard.
6. Adjust the value of the offset until the blade just begins to move.

7. Tap Set again to save settings and stop the blade from moving (Figure 35).

Installation and Calibration

Figure 35: Raise Left Value Committed
8. Do the same for the other valve offsets and ensure the previous settings are accurate.
9. When all valve offsets are set, disengage Auto and tap OK to accept the new valve offset values.

Elevation Gains
Elevation gains remain the same as with standard grader systems.

Slope Gains
The slope gain setting with 3D-MC2 for Graders can be significantly higher than on a standard motor grader. This
allows the blade to move much faster and to stay on grade much more accurately.
Using slope gains that you normally use with a typical System 5 machine does not take advantage of the greater speed
of the 3D-MC2 for Graders system. Some tuning is required as all machines vary.

Hands and feet must be clear of the blade.

Entering a numerical value could cause the blade to move rapidly and unexpectedly. Use caution, and
make sure nobody is near the blade when performing the procedure.
