(Student) Shiem Lott - Enzyme - Web - Quest

This document provides instructions for a biology web quest on enzymes. It includes questions about what enzymes are, how they work, factors that affect their activity, and examples of specific enzymes in the human body. Students are directed to various websites to research answers about enzymes facilitating chemical reactions, with a focus on the role of enzymes in human digestion and metabolism.

Enzyme Web Quest

Instructions: Use the following websites to help you answer the questions below and achieve our
learning target.

Learning Target: I can analyze the role of enzymes in facilitating reactions in the human body.

View the Enzyme Animation at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4OPO6JQLOE and then visit the

following website http://chem4kids.com/files/bio_enzymes.html to and questions 1-7

1. What are enzymes?

Enzymes are proteins that help speed up metabolism, or the chemical reactions in our bodies.

2. Explain why enzymes are specific.

Enzymes are specific because different enzymes have differently shaped active sites

3. Explain the four steps of how enzymes work.

The enzyme and the substrate are in the same area. Some situations have more than one substrate molecule t
the
enzyme will change.
The enzyme grabs on to the substrate at a special area called the active site. ...
A process called catalysis happens. ...
The enzyme releases the product.

4. What are the 4 factors that can regulate enzyme activity?

temperature, pH, enzyme concentration, substrate concentration, and the presence of any inhibitors or activators

5. How does temperature affect enzyme activity?

Higher temperatures tend to speed up the effect of enzyme activity, while lower temperatures decrease the rate
enzyme reaction.

6. What is it called when the protein structure of an enzyme breaks down?

A process called catalysis happens.

7. How does pH affect the structure and function of an enzyme?

Enzymes are also sensitive to pH . Changing the pH of its surroundings will also change the shape of the active
enzyme.

help you answer question 8.

8. Explain how enzymes are used to break down food. Make sure to include a diagram in your
answer. They speed up chemical reactions that turn nutrients into substances and break down what u dig

9. Click on the Lock and Key Model. Explain the Lock and Key Theory.

The lock and key model also called Fisher's theory is one of two models which describe the enzyme-substrate
interaction. The lock and key model assumes that the active site of the enzyme and the substrate are equal shaped.
supposes that the substrate fits perfectly into the active site of the enzyme.

Types of Enzymes in the Human Body:

Use your Google or Yahoo search engine to complete the following. For each enzyme listed below,
search and read about the enzyme. What does it help the body do? Where is it located in the
body? What might happen if that enzyme was not there or did not work properly? Write AT
LEAST three sentences for EACH enzyme, AND write down which website(s) you got your
information from!

1. Pepsin (protease):
An enzyme made in the stomach that breaks down proteins in food during digestion.
The stomach

Without pepsin we wouldn't be able to really

breakdown the proteins we digest.

2. Catalase:
Catalase is a key enzyme which uses hydrogen peroxide, a nonradical ROS, as its substrate. This enzyme is resp
responsible for the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide
