Tausug Architecture

The traditional Tausug house, called the Bay Sinug, consisted of 9 posts that corresponded to parts of the human body. It had walls made of split bamboo and a thatched roof made from materials like nipa palm fronds. The house was constructed using traditional bamboo joinery methods and had interior decorations like tapestries. •The Bay Sinug or the one-room Tausug house


•Consited of 9 posts corresponding the human body
1. The king post, the pusal ;
2. the southeast and southwest corners, the pigi(hip);
3. the northeast and northwest corners, the agata (shoulder);
5. the eastern and western sides of the center post ,
6. the gusuk (ribs);
7. the central post, the liug (neck), the first post to be erected that represent pipul
of the navel;
8. and the south post, the hita (groin).
9. All the eight non-center posts support the roof, which is given form by the ridge
beam and is made from sari, nipa, sago palm, or plaud(coconut palms from the
marang tree.)
