Solution

Titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) is formed by reacting titanium dioxide (TiO2) ore with hydrochloric acid (HCl). The TiO2 ore contains 78% TiO2 and 22% inert materials. The HCl is a 45% solution. In the reaction, 75% of the TiO2 is converted to products while the remaining 25% of unreacted TiO2 is recycled back into the reaction along with new ore. To determine the ratio of recycled TiO2 to fresh ore, the document provides the conversion percentage and indicates some TiO2 is recycled.

"TiCl4 is formed by reacting titanium dioxide (TiO2) with hydrochloric acid (see reaction below).

TiO2 is
available as an ore containing 78 % TiO2 and 22 % inerts. The HCl is available as 45wt% solution (the
balance is water). The per pass conversion of TiO2 is 75 % (this means that75% of the titanium dioxide
entering the reactor is converted to products). The HCl is fed into the reactor in 20 % excess. Pure un-
reacted TiO2 is recycled back to mix with the TiO2 feed.

TiO2 + 4 HCl -----> TiCl4 + 2H2O

what is the ratio of recycle stream to fresh TiO2 ore
