ABSTRACT
iv.

In this study, Moringa oleifera was proposed with the purpose of finding out its

efficacy in treating minor wounds. The researchers are taking on a role here to find

out whether M. oleifera is suitable for treating wounds and not harming people. To

prove that we did thorough research in gathering the information needed, which is to

have a validated questionnaire, The primary instrument used in collecting data is a

survey questionnaire via google forms and an online interview using a semi-

structured, open-ended type questionnaire. This study is being conducted to determine

the perception and effectiveness of Moringa oleifera leaves as a way of treating and

curing skin lesions or bruises in the body, and eventually use the findings of this study

to help people recognize the wonderful healing effects of M. oleifera and help the

community especially those who are not privileged enough to buy medicines to treat

their scars.
Keywords: Moringa Oleifera as a cure in treating minor wounds found in the body.

The Significance of this Study is to investigate and examine the Moringa

Oleifera leaves as a healing product in aiding abrasions, wounds, or skin lesions.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Moringa has been around for a long time and its origins can be traced back to sub-

Himalayan tracts of the Indian sub-continent (Mallenakuppe et al., 2019). This plant

can now be found in the subtropical regions of the world, including the Middle East,

Africa, the Americas, Asia, the Philippines, Cambodia, and the Caribbean islands

(Rockwood et al., 2013). Everyone knows that Moringa leaves are extremely

beneficial to the human body due to its nutritional value that others call it the miracle

tree but did you know that Moringa leaves can be used to heal minor wounds on your

skin. If you were a kid in the Philippines, whenever you stumbled and scraped your

knee, your mother would likely apply M. oleifera leaf extract or “kamungay” as it’s

known locally in the country specifically Cebu. Filipinos believe that kamungay

leaves can be used to cure minor wounds in the skin and are an excellent alternative if

you do not have first aid kits at home especially to those who are living in the rural

areas in the country. Which is why almost every Filipino has a Moringa tree planted

near their house although they mostly use it to make vegetable soups due to its high

nutrient content.

In a study done by Lambole Vijay and Upendra Kumar in 2012, they found out that

an aqueous extract of M. oleifera was able to aid in healing the excision wound

model, incision wound model, and dead space wound model done on the

experimented rats. They found an increase in the breaking strength of all models. The

excision model showed a significant increase in the percentage of wound contraction

1
and a significant decrease in the epithelization period as the excision model treated

with an aqueous extract of M. oleifera possessed enhanced epithelization as the

extract enhanced collagen synthesis. The incision model showed an increase in

breaking strength due to the enhanced collagen synthesis caused by the extract, thus

increasing the strength of the incision wound. The dead space model also showed a

significant increase in granuloma tissue strength. Meanwhile, the extract combined

with the dexamethasone injection was able to counter the dexamethasone’s effects on

collagen synthesis, maturation, deposition, period of epithelization, and

hydroxyproline content, which showed the extract’s potential in countering the anti-

healing effect of steroids on patients receiving steroid therapy.

The researchers aim to determine the effectivity of M. oleifera in healing wounds

according to people who are actively or have used the plant once before. The

researchers are also interested in hearing the public’s opinion about its use to heal

wounds.

2
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

People have been using M. oleifera as a medicine to heal various bodily complications

aside from minor epidermal injuries due to the high nutrient content which is why it’s

been called as a miracle tree due also as to how fast it can grow even in tough

locations. There are even historical mentions of the plant being used by ancient kings

and queens to keep their skin healthy and to improve their alertness. Ancient military

troops have also reported to use the plant’s extract to not only relieve the pain and

stress but to also provide them extra energy during times of war (Sujatha B.K et al.,

2017)

Injuries to the skin that interrupt the soft tissue result in wounds. The complex and

drawn-out process of tissue repair and remodeling in response to injury constitutes the

healing of the wound. Folkore traditions use a wide variety of herbs to treat burns,

wounds and cuts. An herb called moringa oleifera (MO) is used as a traditional folk

medicine to treat a variety of skin lesions and related illnesses. There is no known

explanation on how this ethyl portion of MO leaves extract works to treat the wounds.

The researcher will discuss the background, chemical make-up, palatability, and

overall medical value of the moringa plant in this review. There is a detailed

discussion of how Moringa can treat immunological problems. In addition to killing

pathogens like bacteria, fungus, viruses, and parasites, moringa can help reduce

chronic inflammation, which is a factor in conditions including ulcerative colitis,

asthma, and metabolic disorders. Moringa can also lessen immunological problems

brought on by physical and chemical irritants, including those brought on by metal

toxicity, medicine side effects, or even unfavorable impacts of dietary additives.

Moringa can also prevent autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, atopic

3
dermatitis, and multiple sclerosis. With its numerous immune regulating bioactivities

and minimal adverse effects, moringa has a significant potential to cure

immunological diseases.

The current study looked on the ability of Moringa oleifera leaf extract to heal

wounds using a rat model of an infected excision incision. Methicillin-resistant

bacteria were used to start the infection. Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Staphylococcus

aureus (MRSA). Additionally, research was conducted to learn transforming growth

factor (TGF) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) responses to moringa

extract using human keratinocytes, growth factor beta 1 (TGF-1) gene expression was

carried out in vitro (HaCaT). The extract in methanol oleifera leaves were examined

by LCMS to see if any phytochemicals were present. The extract’s antibacterial

capacity was also established days for epithelization, wound contraction Collagen

deposition, epidermal height, antioxidant enzyme activity, and angiogenesis were

investigated. M. Oleifera demonstrated an antibacterial effect, markedly enhanced

wound contraction, and decreased enhanced antioxidant enzyme activity, the stage of

epithelization, and reduced capillary density. Effect of the extract was less in wounds

infected with P. aeruginosa when compared to MRSA. The VEGF and TGF-β1 gene

expression was increased by M. oleifera.

Our study aims to find the correlation mentioned before and its applicability to human

tissue. We planned on doing controlled research by replicating the same experiment

but to a lesser degree but as we progressed through the creation of our research, we

found a lot of obstacles in doing the experiment with the major one being the lack of

sufficient respondents to meet our target sample size. We can’t provide any

4
compensation to our respondents in order to gather more of them since we lack the

funds to do so and if any of our respondents do receive further complications (i.e.,

infections, diseases) due to our experiment we won’t be able to compensate them nor

we are ready to face legal action. So, we decided to opt for a safer and cheaper route

and find respondents who have used M. oleifera to treat their wounds.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aimed to determine the perception and effectiveness of Moringa

Oleifera leaves as a way of treating and curing skin lesions or bruises in the body.

The study seeks to answer the following questions:

1.) Profile of the respondents :

1.1   Name

1.2   Age

2.) What are the experiences of the people who have used M. oleifera to heal their

wounds?

3.) What is the effectivity of M. oleifera in healing minor epidermis wounds

according to the respondents’ experiences?

4.) What are the perception of the people who use moringa oleifera in healing

wounds.

5
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study aimed to investigate and examine the Moringa Oleifera leaves as a

healing product in aiding abrasions, wounds, or skin lesions according to the

respondents’ experiences. More importantly, this study could be directly or indirectly

helpful and beneficial to the following:

Individuals in the Community. Medicinal plants such as Moringa leaves is

beneficial especially when using it in medicinal application. The findings will allow

the people in the community to be more knowledgeable and aware of the importance

of utilizing Moringa leaves in treating their own wounds and bruises. Instead of going

to the hospital, people can simply use this medicinal plant to treat their own wounds

as this plant is low-cost and can be accessible and available everywhere and people

can find it in their surroundings.

Future Researchers in the Medical Field. The results from this study can help to

promote the further use and research of M. oleifera in wound healing and other

diseases as well thus providing new options to doctors and patients alike.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The general intent of this study is to identify the effectiveness of Moringa

Oleifera as a healing material on wounds based on the respondents’ experiences, thus

the researchers will be conducting an interview and a questionnaire survey.

The study is limited by the following factors,

6
The reliability of information. The research is entirely dependent on our

respondents’ experiences of using M. oleifera leaves to heal their wounds and thus are

entirely reliant on their memories so inconsistencies may be present.

Sample size. There aren’t a lot of people who use M. oleifera leaves to heal their

wounds due to the availability of isopropyl alcohol and povidone-iodine.

Limited knowledge to the topic. The researchers only have a surface level of

knowledge regarding the topic of wound healing.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

RELATED LITERATURE

Based on the research conducted by Rathi, BS, et al. 2006 “Evaluation of

Aqueous Leaves Extracts of Moringa Oleifera Linn for Wound Healing in Albino

Rats. The water-based extract of M. Oleifera was researched and its role in wound

healing was explained. Rats with dead space wound models and resutured incision or

excision wounds were used to test the effects of the aqueous extracts at a dose level of

300 mg/kg body weight. It was found that the hydroxyproline content, granuloma dry

weight, skin-breaking strength, wound closure rate, and scar area all increased

significantly. Increased collagen deposition, along with improved alignment and

maturation, appears to be the causes of the healing effects. It is possible to infer from

the findings that the aqueous extract of M. oleifera has powerful wound-healing

capabilities.

In addition, Moringa oliefera improves immunity to various infections and

keeps the body healthy. They boost the body’s energy levels as well. Additionally,

moringa may benefit heart patients by lowering cholesterol levels and lowering their

risk of developing heart disease. The abundance of antioxidants and nutrients in

moringa leaves contributes to the improvement of skin and hair appearance as well as

weight loss. The antiseptic properties of moringa leaves prevent many bacterial

infections. They aid in wound healing and hasten the recovery of minor cuts, burns,

and bruises. The effects are clear: moringa is a perfect supplement for a healthy

body. “Moringa Leaf Powder – Organic and Naturally Grown.” 2014 According to

this literature, Moringa oleifera is the ideal supplement for a healthy body because it

increases energy levels, lowers cholesterol levels, reduces the risk of heart disease,
8
and can stop many bacterial infections. M. oleifera also promotes skin and hair

growth. They speed up the healing of wounds and the recovery of bruises, burns, and

cuts.

According to Gopalakrishnan, L., et al. 2016 “Moringa Oleifera: A Review

on Nutritive Importance and Its Medicinal Application.” Moringa oleifera grows in

the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It can resist both severe drought and

mild frost. As a result, it is extensively cultivated all over the world. Every part of the

tree is suitable for nutritive or saleable uses because of its high nutritional value. The

leaves are rich in various phytochemicals, vitamins, and minerals. The leaf extracts

are effective for treating malnutrition and augmenting breast milk in lactating

mothers. It is an effective antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-

inflammatory agent. It has been extensively used in folk medicine to treat various

diseases, including liver and cardiovascular disorders.

This review discusses the cultivation, dietary benefits, marketability, and

notable pharmacological properties of this “miracle tree” as well as how it is used

across disciplines for its medicinal value. More than 300 diseases can be cured using

Moringa oleifera’s medicinal properties, which are frequently referred to as a

panacea. Africans and Indians have long used moringa in herbal medicine. It works

well as a medicinal agent because of the phytochemicals present. Their analysis of M.

Oleifera has not yet attained prominence. These miracle trees’ nutrients must be used

for a variety of things.

Based on the research M S, Nurmaziah, et al. 2022 “Scoping Review:

Evaluation of Moringa Oleifera (Lam.) for Potential Wound Healing in in Vivo 9

Studies.”.When tissue integrity is lost, damaged tissues are naturally restored through

the process of wound healing. Traditional uses for Moringa oleifera, also referred to

as merunggai in Malaysia, including the treatment of wounds. Its bioactive

phytochemical content, which has the potential to speed up wound contraction,

increase the rate of epithelialization, and protect tissues from oxidative damage, may

contribute to the accumulation of collagen content and the underlying wound healing

mechanism through antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities.

The majority of studies suggest that M., according to Shafie, Shah,

Krishnan, Haleem, and Tan (2022). Oleifera was used as a gel for topical application

before the extract was used as a paste, patch, or film dressing. M was reportedly

administered orally by two. The other two reported simultaneous administrations of

both ointment and aqueous extract. Oleifera aqueous extract. Their results

demonstrated that the medicinal plant M. oleifera, which is traditionally used as a leaf

paste for wound healing in India, has a beneficial effect on the wound healing process

when given orally or tropically. And with that, M. Oleifera demonstrated the ability to

heal wounds, but more research is required to identify the primary bioactive

phytocompounds and their safety.

RELATED STUDIES 10
In traditional medicine, seeds, leaves, oil, sap, bark, roots, and flowers

are commonly implemented. It has been noticed that moringa leaves have a

balanced nutritional component, including vitamins, minerals, amino acids,

and fatty acids (Moyo et al., 2011; Teixeira et al., 2014; Razis et al., 2014).

Various types of antioxidant chemicals, including ascorbic acid,

flavonoids, phenolics, and carotenoids, are also said to be present in the leaves

(Alhakmani et al., 2013; Vongsak et al., 2014).

Studies have shown that leaf extracts can guard against liver damage

brought on by acetaminophen (paracetamol). Fakurazi and others (2008).

According to research by Jung (2014), an aqueous extract of M.

Oleifera leaves significantly inhibited the growth of a lung cancer cell line as

well as numerous other cancer cell types. In human lung cancer cells, the

extract increased apoptosis, reduced the production of reactive oxygen species

internally, and decreased the development of tumor cells. Additionally, Tiloke

et al. (2013) discovered an aqueous extract of M. antiproliferative effect

against malignant human alveolar epithelial cells in oleifera leaves. No

attempt was made in either of these trials to link particular extract constituents

to the reported effects.

The investigations on humans, animals, and in vitro cells mentioned in

the text above suggest that different M. There are numerous physiological and

pharmacological actions present in oleifera leaves and other plant components.

Aqueous, hydroalcohol, or alcohol (methanol or ethanol) extracts of M have 11

already been employed in the majority of animal investigations, while

powdered leaf preparations have been used in every published study involving

human patients. Leaves or other plant components of oleifera. M’s

antioxidant, antidiabetic (anti-hyperglycemic), anti-dyslipidemic, and

chemoprotective activities have received the most research support. Oleifera

extracts and entire leaf powder.

III. Interview

To gain further insight, we conducted an interview with a medical professional.

Unfortunately, we aren’t allowed to disclose the interviewee’s name as per our
agreement with the interview. We will refer to them as “interviewee and ICU Nurse”.
However, we know that the interviewee is an ICU Nurse working at National Guard
Hospital, Ar Rimayah, Riyadh Saudi Arabia for 12 years.

We sought the interviewee’s opinion on the use of Mr. oleifera to treat minor skin
injuries. On our first question we asked them about the reason on why exactly M.
oleifera is effective at healing such wounds, they answered,

“Malunggay exhibits antibacterial activity against staphylococcus aureus and

staphylococcus typii means that it helps with healing wounds (ICU Nurse, Text
Interview, December 2022).”
Staphylococcus is a type of bacteria responsible for the cause of minor infections and
is relatively harmless if it is treated and found outside of the body. Apparently
23
according to our interviewee, malunggay or M. oleifera is able to combat such
bacteria.

Our interviewer then proceeded to ask them on what makes M. oleifera special to
which they replied,

“M. Oleifera is special because its easily accessible to a regular household (ICU
Nurse, Text Interview, December 2022).”

The interviewer then asked if the plant is accessible back there in Saudi,

“Plants rarely grow here because of the weather, it’s extremely hot here (ICU Nurse,
Text Interview, December 2022).”

For our second question, we asked them about why the Filipinos use M. oleifera to
treat these minor wounds, our interviewee then replied,

“Filipinos are resilient. We always try to find and use alternative treatments if it’s
proven to be safe and used properly (ICU Nurse, Text Interview, December 2022).”

Due to the abundance of M. oleifera within the country and how easily accessible it is
to the Filipinos as mentioned before, they are able to use such plant to treat their own
wounds since its effectiveness has been proven time and time again by many
generations.

If M. oleifera’s effectivity on healing minor wounds has been proven by the Filipinos
then has the plant been used in actual medical institutes? Our interviewer asked this
question and our interviewee responded with a no, saying that they use more
expensive antiseptics in order to treat their patient’s skin ailments.

“As a nurse who works in the ICU, we do not use malunggay, instead we use
expensive skin antiseptics to treat the pressure ulcers of our patients (ICU Nurse, Text
Interview, December 2022).”

We assume that the reason as to why they do not use M. oleifera is because there
haven’t been any official medications made using the plant and that they have to
follow a strict standard in using any medications to their patient in order to ensure
their patients’ safety.

In the fourth question, we asked our interviewee if we can substitute traditional

antiseptics (e.g., alcohol and povidone-iodine) for M. oleifera leaves and extracts. In
response to our question, they recommend its use as long as its applied appropriately.
“For me yes. We can always try another alternative treatment as long as it’s used 24
appropriately (ICU Nurse, Text Interview, December 2022).”
She gave the same answer when we asked her about her professional opinion on M.
oleifera’s use to treat minor wounds.

“Yes, same answer as the previous question. We can always try another alternative
treatment (ICU Nurse, Text Interview, December 2022).”

As for our last question, we asked for any opinions regarding M. oleifera to which she
responded,

“None so far, I hope my presence today would do a great help for your research.
Thank You (ICU Nurse, Text Interview, December 2022).”

In conclusion, M. oleifera is capable of healing or rather aiding the healing process of

minor wounds since it’s able to exhibit antibacterial activities thus it is a safe
alternative for regular antiseptics as long as it’s used appropriately. However, we
recommend that you only use it when you don’t have any access to regular
antiseptics.

CHAPTER 5 25
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

SUMMARY

The primary goal of this study is to determine the effectiveness of moringa leaves in

wound healing. Kamungay leaves are a great substitute that can be used to treat minor

skin wounds. Data for the study were gathered using google forms structured

questionnaires. Many individuals still use malunggay leaves since they have been

shown to be safe for treating minor wounds, according to the evidence presented.

The result of this study showed malunggay leaves helps to treat minor wounds and it

is safely used as healing wounds as alternative. For other reason, malunggay leaves

Bcan be trigger minor injuries if it is not properly used.

CONCLUSION

Moringa Oleifera is reported to have an important role in various ways including the

increase of wound healing. In a study done in 2012 by Lambole Vijay and Upendra

Kumar, they discovered that an aqueous extract of M. Excision wounds, incision

wounds, and dead space wounds created on the test rats could all be healed with the

help of oleifera. This research analyzes the efficacy of using Moringa Oleifera in

treating and healing wounds, as well as curing skin lesions or bruises in the body by

gathering data and information through a survey from the chosen respondents who

have tried using the said M.Oleifera to treat such scars and wounds.

The researchers validate this through the survey done where the result shows that

many people opt to use M. Oleifera as an alternative for regular antiseptic when they
26
don’t have access to the latter. In this study, the researchers quantify the responses

given by the participants. It has been proven that M. Oleifera is a great alternative to

heal wounds and scars as it contains wound healing properties and exhibits

antimicrobial activity against bacteria such as staphylococcus aureus which is a type

of bacteria that is responsible for minor infections and causes skin infections like

boils. Moreover, M. Oleifera is the best alternative when antiseptics and first aids kits

are not accessible since this can be found easily on a regular household.

This study is useful to the community especially those who are not privileged enough

to buy medicines to treat their scars. M. Oleifera is a medicinal plant that could be

easily found, and it has been widely used by people in healing and treating skin

wounds and proven by the majority that it is a great alternative to antiseptics,

antibiotics or ointments.

RECOMMENDATION

As with all studies. The researchers examined that there are still limitations of the

study. Firstly from what we’ve seen in chapter four the results of the analysis, show

that on a scale of 1-5, at least 38.7% of people voted fairly to recommend the use of

moringa oleifera based on their past experience. However, the study still needs to

determine the effectiveness of moringa oleifera for the treatment of minor wounds in

humans. Until more studies are conducted, it is not clear whether moringa oleifera is

an effective treatment for minor wounds in humans. Additionally, there is some

evidence to suggest that moringa oleifera may have wound-healing properties. So we

recommend to underly more about the plant, Moringa Oleifera which can also heal
27
minor wounds found in the person’s body followed by a questionnaire base on their
own experiences as a kid which allows us to look more extensive analysis that the

plant believed to have medicinal properties and are often used in traditional medicine

to treat a variety of ailments. In particular, there is some evidence to suggest that these

plants may be effective in treating minor wounds.

One potential review paper topic could be to investigate the efficiency of moringa and

oleifera in treating minor wounds. This could involve conducting a literature review

to gather information about the existing research on the topic, as well as conducting

your own experiments or clinical trials to test the effectiveness of these plants in

treating minor wounds. In your review paper, you could start by introducing the topic

by explaining the efficiency and the use of Moringa oleifera in treating minor wounds.

You could then describe the existing research on the topic and the effectiveness of

these plants in treating minor wounds. Including any previous experiences that have

been once used as a kid.

Next, you could describe the methods in detail on how you obtained the plants,

prepared them for use, and applied them to the wounds. You could also describe any

control groups or placebo treatments that you used. This could include discussing the

effectiveness of moringa and oleifera in treating minor wounds, as well as any

potential side effects or risks associated with using these plants. Overall, a research

paper on the efficiency of moringa and oleifera in treating minor wounds could be a

valuable contribution to the existing literature on the medicinal properties of these

plants and could help to inform the use of these plants in traditional and modern

medicine
