Tectonic Plates, Earthquake Worksheet
Tectonic Plates, Earthquake Worksheet
I. Study the map showing Earth’s tectonic plates and answer the questions given below.
1. Identify and write the plate on which your native country is situated.
2. State the names of plates that form boundaries with the plate where your country is on.
3. In which hemisphere does this plate lie? (northern hemisphere / southern hemisphere)
4. Identify the direction this plate is moving in. (southward, northward, eastward, westward)
5. What is the average movement of plates? Based on the average rate of movement of plates,
how far would a plate have moved in 10 million years? (answer in kilometres)
Ans:
II. Study the following figure and answer the questions that are given below.
1. What is the difference between the focus and the epicenter of an earthquake?
Ans: The point beneath the earth's surface/underground/b below the epicenter where
rock breaks/the plates shift and the earthquake originates but the epicenter is the
point on the earth's surface vertically above the hypocenter (or focus).
Ans:…………………………Seismic waves………………………………………………..
3. Why can earthquake affect places far away from the focus?
Ans: Earthquakes can happen along any type of plate boundary. Earthquakes occur
when tension is released from inside the crust. Plates do not always move smoothly
alongside each other and sometimes get stuck. When this happens, pressure builds
up. When this pressure is eventually released, an earthquake tends to occur.
4. Humans may be able to feel an earthquake when the magnitude is
Ans:……………………2-2.9…………………………………………………..
5. Find out how many times more powerful a 7 magnitude quake is compared to 3 magnitude
on the Richter scale.
Ans:………………………6-6.9…………………………………………………………..
