Field Study 1 Episode 5.1
Field Study 1 Episode 5.1
From how I observe them, they are very participative in the class, they always
share their ideas, and they are competitive. Their ages range from 14 to 17 years old.
2. How many boys are there? How many girls?
The class has 35 students: 14 males and 21 females.
3. Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?
They can manage their own behavior by showing respect to other people,
being responsible for assigned tasks, and exercising self-discipline, especially when it
comes to class discussion.
4. Can the learners already work independently?
They can handle, manage, and accomplish easy tasks, but some of them can no
longer work independently when it comes to serious and complex tasks, which will
need the guidance and assistance of the teacher.
5. Describe their span of attention.
The students’ span of attention in this classroom depends on how their teacher
motivates them. It depends on the students’ willingness to participate in the classroom
discussion. The subject matter also influences the learners’ attention span. If their
topic is quite boring, then they tend to divert their attention to other things.
Analyze
1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids, books,
students’ belongings, supplies, etc.)? Describe these areas. Will make a difference if
these areas for specific purposes are not present?
The classroom set up is just a typical and traditional Philippine high school style
where there is a blackboard in front of the room and a table in the center front. The row of
seats is occupying the whole space of the room with only minimal spaces left for other areas.
2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room? List them down. Do these rules
reinforce positive behavior?
Turn off cellular phones and other electronic devices.
Raise your hand when you would like to speak in class or need the bathroom
Maintain cleanliness
The rules and regulations reinforce positive behavior since they prevent the learners
from misbehaving. Making the rules and regulations known to the learners acts as a guide to
good manners. Establishing classroom rules reflects the students’ successful learning.
Students become responsible for their actions, which helps them understand their task clearly.
3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules? If the Resource Teacher is
available, ask him/her to describe the process What’s effect of students’
participation in rule-making on student’s behavior?
According to the teacher, the students participated in establishing the classroom rules
through voting, headed by the classroom president, with the guidance of the teacher. Students
who are involved in creating the rules are most likely to become disciplined and responsible
if they conform to the rules positively.
4. What are the daily routines done by the Resource Teacher? (prayer, attendance,
assignment of monitors, warm up activities, etc.) How are they done?
To start the class, the teacher asks a representative from the class to lead the prayer.
This was followed by pleasantries. The class monitor will then report on attendance and
move on to the discussion.
5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement? Does this help in
managing the class?
The class were seated alphabetically. Using this arrangement, the teacher easily
identify the absent students. This also help her to recognize a student’s name especially in
oral recitation.
6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?
In a typical classroom, the noise level is quite high as students like to talk a lot with
their seatmates. The teacher remains calm while telling them to lower their voices. She tells
them that there are also other classes that they can disturb with their loud noises. If the
children are making too much noise while the teacher is talking, she will pause the
discussion, and after a little interval, the noise stops.
7. If a learner is not following instruction or is off task, what does the Resource Teacher do?
Describe the behavior strategies used.
When learners are not following instructions, the teacher doesn’t lecture and remind
them. The teacher gives the students a chance to grasp the gravity of not following her
instructions without spelling it out for them.
8. What does the Resource Teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (behavior strategies)
The following are the strategies used by the teacher to reinforce positive behavior:
Address problems in a friendly manner. She doesn’t scold them, instead talks to them
calmly.
Celebrate achievements through praising them.
Reflect
1. Why do you need to enforce positive discipline?
Positive discipline is a more effective way to manage misbehaving students in the
classroom, rather than using punishment or rewards. It allows students to learn and adapt
their behaviors to meet expectations in the classroom, while simultaneously teaching them
how to make better choices in their path to adulthood.
