Action Research Proposal-Jecel J. Servano

This action research proposal aims to improve students' reading comprehension at Kalamansig National High School through various reading activities. The study will assess 52 Grade 11 students' current reading comprehension levels through a pre-test and then implement activities like KWL charts, SQ3R, DRTA, vocabulary strategies, story maps and compare/contrast diagrams over two months. A post-test will evaluate any changes in comprehension. If significant improvements are found, the reading activities could help other teachers support learners. The research will follow ethical guidelines and disseminate results to educators for analysis and discussion.

I. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE

Reading Comprehension among English Language Learners has a long and rich

history in the world of research. In classroom setting during teaching-learning

process, students as well as teachers are strained to learning barriers brought by

poor reading comprehension of students. Moreover, the main aim of teaching

reading is to enable students to comprehend reading from different contents easily,

(Ministry of Education, 2002) as cited in Abdelrahman (2014). As an English

teacher, it will be such a relief if we could offer solutions for this problem. Identifying

and testing reading activities that will enhance the comprehension level of the

learners is the top most priority of this action research.

II. RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This study will focus on the enhancement of students’ reading

comprehension skills and finding out the suitable reading activity/ies that will

support the study’s focus.

Specifically, it will seek answers to the following questions:

1. What is the level of reading comprehension?

2. Are the reading activities effective in enhancing student’s reading

comprehension level?

3. Is there a significant difference in the pre-test and post-test result of

students?

III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention Strategy

A pre-test categorized as to easy, average, and difficult for

reading comprehension will be administered before engaging students into

reading activities that could possibly increase their comprehension level.

The intervention which includes reading activities such as Know, Want,

and Learn (KWL) chart, Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review

(SQ3R), Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA), Vocabulary Self-

selection Strategy (VSS), Story Maps, and Compare and Contrast

Diagrams will be applied for two months two optimize maximum positive

result. The six reading activities are proven to increase learner’s reading

comprehension as evident in the study of Andres (2020). After the

intervention, a post-test will also take place which is similar to the pre-test

and is also categorized into easy, average, and difficult.

IV. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS

a. Participants

It will be conducted to the fifty-two (52) Grade 11-Yakal HUMSS

students.
b. Locale of the study

The action research study will be conducted at the Kalamansig

National High School.

Figure 1. The Map of the Locale of the Study.

c. Research Design

The researcher will be conducting a pretest and post-test categorized

into easy, average, and difficult. The results of these tests will be used in

computing the statistical data for this study.

d. Research Instrument

The quantitative data is analyzed by using descriptive statistic. It is

used to analyze data from the result of the teaching learning process. It is

done to compare the students’ reading comprehension level before and after

the action or the result of pre-test and post-test. The mean of the pre-test and

the post-test undergo Pearson r statistical treatment.

e. Data Gathering Methods

As soon as the Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) granted

permission to conduct the study, the researcher will do everything to solve the

research problem.

The accomplished forms and data will be collected and the results will

be analyzed and interpreted. The details of the above process will be

presented in the waterfall diagram (Figure 2).

f. Statistical Treatment of Data

The data will be organized, tabulated, then analyzed and interpreted utilizing

the following:

Mean will be used to get the reading comprehension level of students before

employing the identifies reading activities.

Mean will also be used again to get the reading comprehension level of

students after employing the identifies reading activities.

Pearson r statistical treatment will be used to know if there is significant

difference on the students’ reading comprehension before and after engaging to

reading activities.

g. Ethical Issues

Informed consent will be employed to the participants of the study. The result

will be confidential to protect the rights of the participants.

(State the ethical issues about the topic/study and include the

source and author)

VII. Plans for Dissemination and Advocacy

The researchers will disseminate the result of the research study to the

teachers, school administrators for further discussion and analysis. The reading

activities might be effective to the learners involved in this research so other

teachers might as well use it during their classes.

The researcher will present the action research study to the research

forum in the region, national or international levels then publish the book in the

chosen publishing house as a sort of information dissemination of the results of

the study.
